I was travelling down the M53 between Clatterbridge and Prenton last night, when I get the ol' judders. I could smell a strange burning smell earlier on and thought the head-gasket had gone and waited for the plumes of smoke, but nothing. Then realised it must be the petrol, but my fuel pump beeps when it's just getting the fumes through. And if I couldn't be any more in the middle of nowhere. I had to ascend the bank on the side of the road, which was covered in thin wispy trees that cut me to ribbons, then had to walk along a farm track for about a mile, then another mile through Storeton Woods, to the petrol station. And then back again, four miles in total!!
Those hard shoulders are scary, you don't realise how fast those cars are going, and it's damned loud as well!

I think we have all been there or very close to it. Sounds like you did get it on the move again. Having a few Members Mobile Numbers could have helped you alot. At least you now know how accurate the petrol gauge is now.

When i had my first car.... ('F' reg MG Metro) i ran out of fuel outside Habitat in chester, just in that park and ride lane. I could not believe my luck, and there was a big queue in the bus shelter. I could of died. Mum told me the fuel guage was not working as it never moved, but i realised she never put enough fuel in it for it too move off the end stop. Some walking later and a can of petrol i get the car going and progress home with a battered ego... Also, ive done it on the M62 in XR2i when i had it, i thought to myself, i should be needing petrol about now but the fuel guage said half full, so i pressed on. 15mins later at a illegal speed i feel the car judder then fail to rev, ignitions lights come on, so clutch in and pull over. Try to start the car, open bonnet so whats up with the engine, nothing visable, open petrol cap too the sound of hissing....and the guage moves to empty....ahh.... Open boot, get petrol can out full of fuel.. and away i go.. Get a petrol can, as one day you will need it, or someone will, and its not nice to have to buy a petrol can then buy the fuel.. Oh yea, i ran out of fuel on the M56 too in mums car...she went on holiday and said too me, 'there is enough fuel to get you too manchester airport too pick me up'. Going along the M56 just past the M6 just up the hill the car dies, this is about 5-50am. So im thinking...erm what can i do... Ah, luckily the gf was staying with me, so i ring her to come get me, but she has never drove in chester before as she lives in newcastle...so i have to tell her where to drive and what lane to be in..when..and where..

I have got a petrol can, but does it ever have petrol in?? It was actually a nice walk there and back and my girlfriend was checking out some horses looking over the wall on the way.
