Time to witness a wildlife spectacle to remember at Parkgate

Enjoy a date with nature at Parkgate this weekend and join the RSPB to experience one of the best wildlife spectacles in the region.

Many local people are familiar with the phenomenon of the high “spring” tides flooding the vast saltmarsh of the estuary, but few have been there to witness it and the activity that follows.

In a bid to encourage people to experience the wildlife spectacle for themselves, free events will be held by the team from RSPB Dee Estuary nature reserves from Friday 31 January to Monday 3 February – with telescopes and binoculars available for public use.

Dan Trotman, Visitor Development Officer at RSPB Dee Estuary reserves, said: “The high tides in early December and January were some of the biggest and sadly most destructive in many years. Seeing the incoming tide reach the sea wall at Parkgate is unimaginable on a normal day due to the extent of the marsh, but in December the tide even came over the wall onto the promenade.

“These infrequent natural events are something we like to celebrate because it is a chance for people to see this part of our nature reserve on the estuary at its most impressive. The Dee’s saltmarsh is home to hundreds of small mammals which are flushed from their homes by the incoming tide, attracting magnificent birds of prey including short-eared owls and hen harriers to feed.

“With thousands of wetland birds trying to keep on the edge of the water, large flocks can be seen shifting around trying to find drier ground. Other predators take advantage too – foxes will be more than happy to snatch an easy meal, whilst even herons and gulls have been seen helping themselves to voles and small birds.

“It’s not easy watching the voles desperately fleeing for their lives – in December dozens were scrambling up the sea wall and running across the road – but it’s a great reminder of how much wildlife is thriving on the marsh and the value of the RSPB protecting such a vast wilderness.”

The RSPB will be hosting the free events at Parkgate’s Old Baths car park and at the Donkey Stand on the four days of upcoming high tides; Friday 31 January, Saturday 1, Sunday 2 and Monday 3 February.

Dan added: “The extent of the spectacle is dependent on the weather conditions on the day – low pressure and a strong northwesterly wind are the best to drive the tide in fully, which is quite likely with the weather we’ve had so far this winter. Obviously that’s something we won’t know for definite until closer to the time; it’s a case of keeping an eye on the weather forecast, but we’ll keep our fingers crossed and be present at Parkgate regardless.”

Car parking is limited on Parkgate promenade and at the Old Baths car park, but the RSPB has arranged for extra free parking to be available for visitors at Marsh Nurseries on Boathouse Lane (CH64 6RD) and the Wirral Country Park car park on Station Road (CH64 6QJ).

The events are fully supported by Cheshire West and Chester council and are part of the Wild Wirral “Date with Nature”, which is showcasing the outstanding wildlife of the Wirral Peninsula and its coastline through a series of events in partnership with Wirral Borough Council this winter. Full details and dates of further events can be found on the RSPB website, here: www.rspb.org.uk/datewithnature/327690-wild-wirral-

Nice thing to do, see, and be involved with.

Can I suggest that if anyone goes, they do take their own binoculars if possible. You could miss so much if you can't get access to a pair and depending on how many people attend, you could be last in the queue.

Thanks for letting us know MostynW.

I wouldn't rely on Liverpool High Water as it is different on the Parkgate side of the Wirral, a more effective way is to go to:

I didn't manage to get to see the spectacular that was the recent very high tides, and have been at Parkgate many a time for a 'high tide' that never came, so looking forward to this with a little optimism smile

Approx. 15mins difference ! It's called the Tidal Constant. What's more important is the strength and direction of the wind on the day. Neap or Spring? Barometric Pressure is in the mix as well. The time it takes for the surge to travel up the gullies/gutters is something else.

I regard the comment "I wouldn't rely on Liverpool High Water" as somewhat rude, teetering on ignorant. I was trying to be of help! What do I know about Dee tides anyway? I've only spent night after night on the marshes when younger, waiting for the pre-dawn flights of duck to come over. The knowledge of the local tides was er... a little handy! ie. You drown or you don't drown. Simples!

...think I heard that the wind direction is forecast to change from Friday, with winds coming in more from the south. If that's the case, the waters might not push in as far as we'd all perhaps hope to see.

Thanks for the tide times happy

I was just trying to be of help also. Perhaps we could return to keeping this INTERESTING post on topic.

15 mins can be very important depending where you are when you decide to take a look at this!

I have been confused by the 'Liverpool' tide times previously and was merely pointing people to a more accurate tide website with heights just as I said, to help.

And 15 minutes can turn into half an hours difference or more depending on the wind direction and strength.

And 15 minutes standing waiting for something can feel like an hour if the weather is such that it freezes your bits off, so lets hope its not too cold!!!

We are threatened/ promised with a "significant storm" in UK over Friday and Saturday. If that materialises I urge folk to take special care along the sea front at Parkgate, or elsewhere.

So you either dress for the conditions or stay at home; I know what my choice would be.

Weather forecast does not look good at all for Fri/Sat.

First time I went down to Parkgate for the high tide, I was expecting to see the 'sea' coming in. It doesn't seem to happen that way down there does it? It comes up under the marshes, and that is how we see the wildlife lifting off from their nests etc. They are being lifted and then obviously take flight or fright.

Maybe that is why you thought the high tides hadn't arrived down there Sallybear .

So being a gradual process, I think 15mins here and 15mins there will not have any impact on the desired spectacle.
An hour and a half to two hours, is probably a more likely stretch of time to spend down there. So wrap up, with gloves .

Theres a choice of where to watch from too Granny, Theres the old Parkgate Baths, the Donkey stand in the middle , then further along theres the footpath to the marsh at the end of the sewage farm rd -the water comes up the field occasionally if theres high tide plus really bad weather , then of course you can look from the bottom of Marshlands Rd -but because the bottom may be flooded ,that would stop you having access to the viewing paddock just beyond the Harp . To get to that you need to either cut through Orchard Drive and turn right down the footpath behind the Harp and then turn left along Quayside, or drive into the estate into Sunningdale Way then into Treetops, cut through the footpath to Quayside and turn right. Its not as dramatic as Parkgate front, but you see the flooding from a different angle and if its a really high tide and a NW wind, it could be a good view.
