From Messinia to the Mersey - Classical Greek Sculpture in the Walker Art Gallery
- Stephen O’Brien
Wednesday 29 February 2012 , 1-2 p.m. CRN 16907
The art of Classical Greece has produced some of the most memorable and highly-regarded imagery in the world, and has inspired countless works in subsequent generations of artists. Nowhere is this more true than in the field of sculpture. While many collections of Classical sculpture lie far from Merseyside, the Walker Art Gallery is home to casts of sculptures from the Classical temples of the Parthenon in Athens and Bassai in Arcadia. This talk will provide a detailed guide to these works of ancient art, not only in terms of what they represent and how they were created, but also by placing them in their full social, cultural and political context in the ancient Greek world. Audiences will gain a new appreciation of these works and their influence.

During the last century, the term 'sculpture' has been applied to an expansive range of practices, processes and materials. This talk looks at some of the problems posed to galleries such as the Walker and asks whether we can continue to call this evolving form of art ‘sculpture’.
