I agree, Escapades. I've even enquired with the insurers about buying back, and Vauxhall said I can pick the car up, although I don't know whether this will mess up my claim. :? Anyone had experience with this, as I haven't got a clue, and am probably worrying about nothing.

just got the email of me sister here's the info..
if the crash isnt their fault they have two options -
1) if they have fully comp cover with own insurance company they can get their own insurers to deal with the claim & they will then - as long as the third parties insurers admit liabilty - recover the outlay incurred from the third party insurers & the No claims bonus will be reinstated once the insurers who paid out have recovered the outlay. It will show as claim but a non fault & no it should not affect
or other option
2) ask the insurers of the at fault person to deal with the not at fault persons claim.
It wont affect a claim if a vehicle is written off no, basically a vehicle is written of if the cost of the vehicle repairs exceeds i think 60% of the value of the vehicle before the accident.
does this answer the question??

I think you're right as that's round about what they said. I get the 'market value' (I'm not expecting much), and to buy back the car, they said they will take 5% off my pay out, and I can have my car back.
The thing is, with it 'written off', can I use it, or will I have to break it? Is it insurable?
I went up today to pick it up, got the train for the first time in years. I arrived (after having to walk about 3 miles) and they said the body shop people have gone home and they didn't have the key. Typical Vauxhall customer service as usual.

There are 4 different categories for write off's. Cat A and Cat B's arent worth repairing at all since the damage is so extensive. C's and D's can be repaired (if the insurance companys thinks its worth it) and can be put back on the road.
By the sounds of it, yours will probably be a cat D since the damage is minor, but because of the car's age, the insurance company dont think its worth repairing.
If you do buy it back and get it repaired yourself, it will be registered as a Cat D write off. The value will drop even more becuase of this.

£10.50 and a bag of cheese and onion crisps, and youve got yourself a deal.
Thing about lies is... you will finally get caught out, remember that

When my car was deicded to be beyond economical repair, the isnruance company of the party at fault (Norwich Union) let me keep the car anyway. With regards to a payout, make sure you hold out and dont accept their first offer. I was offered £525 at first, and Parkers confirmed this was a good price (they valued it at £545), but I let it stew for a few days and then rang up asking what their offer was, they said £525, so I said I had a quote from an independent website who suggested it was nearer the £600 mark, and they paid me £600 lmao! I read not to accept a first quote in Auto Express, and it usually works from what I have heard. Still got it now, although its sorned. Good job too, as I may need to swap the engine from it to my current Clio thanks to my stupidity.
