Hello everyone. I have just found out that my great grandfather was born at 10 Davies Street in Birkenhead. The date was 1874 so I'm sure the street doesn't exist anymore. I was wondering if anyone had a map of where it used to be please?
Sorry, it was opposite to the 'Flat Iron' pub on the triangle end of Claughton Rd, and Conway St, by where the cinema was, or where the car park and bus station are now.
If you remember the Ritz / Essoldo cinema was then you will know where Davies St. was - because it was directly underneath it. The cinema was bounded by Kendal St, Wilton St, Claughton Rd and Oliver St. So Davies St must have been demolished sometime before 1937, when the Ritz was built and opened.
Just for information, it was bombed during the war and rebuilt inside as the front was largely undamaged.
It converted to a bingo hall in 1966, swapping name and function with the Essoldo over the road in Conway St. Sometime in 1996 or just after, it was demolished (shortly after the flyover was demolished) and became a car park.
Just a quick note to thank everyone for their help in finding Davies Street, Birkenhead. Your assistance is helping me to keep my family tree up to date on Ancestry. What does surprise me is that I must have passed by the area on many occasions as my family doctor in my youth and younger days were situated in the new building which was built quite near.
