Ok, so i thought i discussion on car security might be useful because there was van stolen and crashed last nite in ellesmere port and also ive heard of a few others lately in the area....

What else can you apart from the obvious such as park in well lit areas etc.

You put on a Cat 1 alarm.
Always use a steering wheel lock when you leave the car.

Do you think it is excessive to have both a steering wheel lock AND one for the handbrake/gearstick??

I was considering trying to convince my parents to put a gate up to block off our driveway but i don't know if this needs planning permission or if you can just do it, but it would make me feel a lot safer about my car in terms of it being vandalised by all the trouble makers around here.

Anyone have any other suggestions on ways to reduce the risk of theft and/or vandalism?

I also saw in halfords today ballards that block your driveway to prevent your car being taken easily, some people may find these useful?

Kind regards,
Dan

I have considered this by mounting it onto the garage that overlooks the driveway, but i don't want people trying to knock it down.

Ideally need a way to let people know they are being taped, but not let them see where from....

All depends where you live and what car you drive.

If you have a Subaru Impreza..'the chances are it will be used as a get away car'...i was told by the sales rep in the Subaru garage when i looked at one. If you have a standard basic 1.0 Metro you could probably leave it unlocked and no-one will touch it.

If the car is more than half decent, or worth some value, i would go for a wheel clamp when it is at home, & a thatcham 1 alarm.

You can get a bollard for the driveway to stop it being driven off, but if your car was in the garage, and the bollard was up, people would start to think what you had in the garage for you too put the bollard up...

A guy i know had a CBR900RR (Fireblade) back in 1998. He parked it at the back of his garage, then parked the car up too it so you could not get it out. He then parked another car against the door to the garage. This was how he did it for months.

One morning he got a knock from the police because his car was in the middle of the road. When he went outside, his car was on the road, and the garage door open.

Turns out the theifs had cut the brake cable on the car to roll it away from the door. Opened the door, but could not start the car, nor move it to gain access to the bike. So they dragged the bike over the top of the car.

Imagine the insurance claim for that...the loss of the bike, and the damage too 2 cars..

If they want it, they will take it. I would prefer them to make as little mess as they could and never see it again.

This applies to my car and my bike.. smile

I have CCTV all around my home and it records 24/7 and i also have a cat 1 alarm/immboliser and a big dog so you have been warned.

i think the best thing you can do is
1,CCTV
2,cat 1 alarm/immboliser
3,gate at the end of the dive

you don't need planning permission to put a gate up on your own property its called sercuity happy

hope this helps matey

Personally i use this :

and this

[Linked Image]

Also my Impreza is fitted with Cat 1 Alarm, Fuel and Ignition cut out switches seperate to the alarm and CCTV for approx 98% of the time it is parked up

different security threats require different forms of protection as a rule.

A Tracker will not deter or catch some chav vandalising or scratching your car for example but CCTV will hopefully identify them. Then you can find them and use the baseball bat on them.
A Cat 1 alarm will not stop the car from being stolen but will deter an oppertunist.

In my past experiance a baseball bat works in most situations, i used one about 8 years ago on someone who attempted to steal my car and touch wood i havnt had any problems since.

Maybe this is not everyones cup of tea, but when its MY property that i work my plumbs off for and someone thinks they have the right to simply come along and damage or take away my property then in my eyes they really do have whats coming to them......
