In a move widely expected, the Chancellor Gordon Brown has today announced that fuel duty will be frozen until September 1. In addition, there will be a new zero rate of Vehicle Excise Duty of cars with the lowest carbon emissions and £40 duty for cars with low emissions. The announcement means that 3 million motorists will now pay £100 or less.

For those with cars with the highest level of emissions, there will be a £210 duty to pay. This is thought to affect 4x4s used in towns, but this is also unlikely to appease environment pressure groups who have been calling for a tax of £600 on so-called "Chelsea tractors".

Well jay let that be a lesson to you. you should of kept the scooby.

Only messing. thats going to hit a lot of small business quite hard. Its all well and good hitting the "soccor moms" who use it for school runs but honest business men will be crippled.

My understanding is that it is emissions based.

So a a 3.0 TD and 2.5 TD shouldnt be too bad, its the big, petrol gas guzzlers that I think will be really hit....

Those changes only effect cars registered on or after March 1st 2001

Does that mean there is no change for cars before that date confused

Looks That Way.

6) Why are pre 2001 registered vehicles with an engine capacity of 1549 or above been subjected to increased duty when the lower rate remains the same?

The intention is to encourage people to drive cleaner, more fuel-efficient vehicles.
