Feel sorry for this couple.Life must seem very unfair. You do the right thing , work all your life, pay off your mortgage and stay close by looking after elderly parents, and then you find you cant move because all the houses around you, are going for a £1 Hope the council reconsiders about reinstating their offer. http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-news/liverpool-couple-spent-years-paying-9109001

its very sad news, read this earlier, wholly unfair but if I have it correct the houses only go for £1 to people who can fix them up above standards. The street will be restored and the wait will be worth it as the average prices should go up.

There again, I suppose its no more unfair than for the people who have also done all the right things , been frugal only to find they are eventually in a residential home paying £800 a week sitting next to a person who lived life to the hilt of their wages never saving anything, and who gets the room next door free.

Why don't they just hold on another year or two until the street is fully regenerated?

He paid for what he has, a home.People buying a house in the avenue I live in will pay over a hundred thousand pounds more than I did.A look on "zoopla" and house prices in Garrick Street Toxteth L7 vary over the years. I will wager the house for a quid buyer, will be out of pocket for a lager amount than the poor couple who shot themselves in the foot by not selling to the council.Move along nothing to moan about here.

I think I would feel upset if next door only paid a £1 for their house. When they paid whatever on the mortgage and have modernised and maintained their home all these years. I`m sure they do regret not accepting the offer. Its like people who rent for years then don`t have anything to show for it. At least they knew they were on the property ladder and had the security of a roof over their heads. But surely with all the regeneration going on in their street it`ll make it a nicer place/area to live in. Then in a year or two they`ll get a fair price as when it`s valued it`ll be recognised as a regenerated area with young families.

Quite understand there bitterness--my wife and I took time off from work because of a stressful situation at home and an emergency trip abroad to escort home a sick son who had been hospitalised and help him recover. On return her boss had emailed her union to say he basically wanted to get rid of her --amicably of course-- if she couldn't guarantee not being off again. Despite a policy saying they were allowed up to 6 months off on full pay and next 6 months on half pay. Its a form of blackmail-because if you fight it and lose you end up with "dismissal on your record" and not able to work in that profession again. The added stress her boss has put on her (she was the main wage earner) has wrecked her emotionally. Sadly the boss has done the same with 6 other employees 2 of which I have seen in our house in tears. The Union wasn't much help other than negotiate settlement terms. At present we stand to lose our house-- its very hard not to feel bitter towards the "bar steward" and we have to remember "Vengeance is Gods--he will repay" Cant be too specific as have a gagging order on us

cheers guys--lots of people in the world in far worse circumstances. Been a real eye opener when you sit down and work out your budget--you realise why so many people are struggling these days-especially young people trying to start out in life.
