Hi,
I have 9yrs No Clams Car Insurance.
It was last renewed in my name May 2013 - Expiring May 2014
So this May 2015 I will not have had insurance for 1yr.

In the past ive played swap the policy with my partner.
So every other year we would become the new policy Holder and the other the Named Driver. And increasing our No Claims every time we became the policy holder.

My Dilemma !
I'm no longer with my partner,
I no longer need my own car, (I am a Named Driver on other cars).
And My 1yr / 12 months is coming to an end.

If I cant find away to extend the 1yr / 12 month limit then i may have to look into buying a run around for the sake of re insuring again to keep my No Claims Bonus alive.

Has anyone heard of any other ways to keep my No Claims Alive.
When i made enquiries a few years ago it was fairly new for No Claims to carry over a 12 month period.
So im wondering if its moved on from there. .. .. .

Cheers.

No claims bonus expiry dates - how long do they last?
A no claims bonus doesn't usually have an expiry date. However if you take a break from driving and don't have any insurance for several months you may find it more difficult to use your existing no claims discounts when you need to renew.

While there is no set expiry date for your no claims, most insurers will only accept proof of your no claims discount if your previous policy expired less than 2 years ago.

Some insurers may only accept no claims for up to 12 months after your previous policy has ended while others allow up to 3 years, so make sure to shop around to check if you can use your no claims if you've had a gap without cover.

As i suspected.
Its down to the new company if they want to accept a gap or not. If I go past May its going to get difficult to carry them over.

I may have to do a bit of digging to find the ones that will go 3yrs but that will probably up the premium and be no cheaper than having none at all.

A lot of companies now reduce the amount of accrued no claims on a year-by-year basis so you don't lose all you no claims in one hit. I know it doesn't answer your specific question but it may not be quite as bad as starting over.

The car doesn't have to be on the road nor even mot'd or taxed to be insured and maintain the no claims, whether that is cost effective or not I've no idea.

My cheapest insurances are under £200 fully comp (£130 and £170 iirc) but do not carry no claims bonus.

Yeah i will do some leg work on this.
I need to do some 0yrs Claims and 9yrs price comaparisons as it may just be cheaper to let them go.

Or put a car on the drive with no tax or mot. And insure it.

I need to quiz an insurance company to see if the car has to be at my registered address, I know it does not have to be in my name for me to be the main policy holder. As i could help a friend out by insuring his car for a year. But my gut says if i'm the policy holder then it has to be at my registered address.

Will let you know how i get on.
As i went deep into it a few years ago, only to realise your at the misery of the insurance companies.

Is there any possibility maybe of holding onto your general no claims by keeping a cheap moped insured ?

Unfortunately not, every class of insurance has separate no claims, so a bike and a car are not transferable, a first car and a second car are not transferable and even a car to a van is not either. Sometimes discretionary introductory discounts/offers will take into account other bonuses but it can't be relied upon.
