Dozens of Wirral residents were evacuated by police after firefighters discovered highly dangerous gas cylinders at the scene of a blaze.

Firefighters were called to Bedford Avenue in Rock Ferry at about 3.30pm today to tackle a waste fire at the rear of a property.

When crews discovered the two acetylene cylinders an hour later, they contacted police. Officers then decided to evacuate 54 nearby homes, and a police cordon was put in place to protect the public.

Acetylene is an extremely flammable gas which can explode under certain conditions.

Drivers were strongly advised to avoid the area while the incident was ongoing. Both ends of Bedford Avenue were closed off this evening and only emergency vehicles were being allowed access.

Firefighters were cooling the cylinders, a process which can take up to 24 hours.

Group manager Paul Murphy said: “Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service along with partners from Merseyside Police and Wirral council are continuing to liaise with residents in the area.

“Firefighters are still at the scene and are now in the process of cooling and monitoring the acetylene cylinders.”

Saw the fire engine & the truck leaving.heading back to the station before,I don't live far from there.
