Seventies comedies would not be allowed on television screens today because they were so racist and offensive, the outgoing head of Ofcom has said.
Ed Richards, who stands down as chief executive of the media watchdog at the end of this month, said programmes from a previous generation were no longer suitable for today’s more enlightened audiences.
Although he did not name names, comedies like ‘Love Thy Neighbour’, ‘It Ain’t Half Hot Mum’ and ‘Mind Your Language’ have all been criticised in recent years for their racial stereotyping.
In ‘Mind Your Language’ which ran from 1977 to 1986, Germans were represented as dour and humourless; the French as sexy and flirtatious and the Chinese as communist agitators.
'Love Thy Neighbour' saw a black man referred to as ‘nig-nog’ and ‘Sambo’ while 'It Ain’t Half Hot Mum' regularly made jokes about the cultural differences between the Indians, Burmese and Japanese.

As I remember the white character in love thy neighbour was referred to as white honky so it wasn't one way.

Old School comedy such as those mentionned above would beat anything on the TV these days!! Bring it all back!!

People in Britains views have not changed all that much!

Does "Enlightened" mean politically right on people who percieve to love fashionable LBG comics and generally unfunny people?

"Till Death us Do Part" with Alf Garnett - as far away from political correctness as you can get. "It's all the fault of them bloody c**ns I tell yer....." was a favourite line of his. Said with clenched fists and steam just about coming out his ears!

well, that will surely extend itself to the films too. Carry On's...too sexist, The Godfather....too much wrong information about the Mafia, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest...too sensitive towards mental health sufferers, Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory ...must change rude name and too much brain washing of kids to eat sweets.

We'll all be sitting watching a screen with nothing but news about war, starvation, child abuse and poverty soon. So we may as well get shut of our TV's and computers, save our selves some money and read 'Ten Little Nigger Boys' or Life of Brian (whoops, no one has decided that's blasphemous yet, but they would if it was about Mohammed . )

Grrrrrrrrrrr ! They'll just push the boundaries until there's uproar of one form or another.

Hi Pinz hi ...looks like it could all start here ?

Ed Richards...not even 45yrs old yet and earning £381,000 for telling us what we can or cannot watch. Arse.

Life Of Brian...
Some countries, including Ireland and Norway, banned its showing, with a few of these bans lasting decades. The filmmakers used such notoriety to benefit their marketing campaign, with posters stating "So funny it was banned in Norway!"

I suppose Ireland would have banned it being a Roman Catholic country, but I think it's hilarious and obviously many others did too. It never had to be taken seriously did it ?
Maybe they should have banned the Magdalene Sisters !

I suppose Mr Creosote in The Meaning of Life will be seen as belittling(?) to obese persons ?

Warning do NOT watch this short clip if you've recently eaten.....

Surely a more enlightened audience would do what we did in the 70s and laugh with these programmes and never even consider them to be anything other than amusing with no sinister connotations meant or intended.Sadly we are now in a different world where we have to be wary of every thought, sound or movement that we make.

They are trying to turn us all into robotic thinking.

I love racist jokes, I love sexist jokes, some issues are close to the bone but as long as I know the comedian/show is edgy then it's my choice whether to watch or not.

I am overweight, losing my hair and wear glasses and any jokes about any of these issue DO NOT bother me in the slightest.

Cant understand when people watch Chubby Brown or Frankie Boyle for example then complain they were offended, it would be like me an Evertonian going to watch Liverpool play and moaning if they scored a goal or won.

World has gone mad and it gets worse on a daily basis.

The only theme that ran through 'Little Britain' was using racist/sexist/homophobic jokes? Do they get off because one of them is gay, while the other is seriously borderlining on it.
They had one about a stereotypical Thai ladyboy, which I thought was pretty bad, but nobody was too bothered because the target wasn't a black or Pakistani.
I wonder if it will be viewed in the same way in 20 years time, with people claiming they were disgusted by it.

Although some 70s comedy shouldn't make a comeback I was surprised to read yesterday that the BBC have dropped Frankie Boyle for making a joke about the Mountbatten assassination of 1979.

I like to watch a lot of old rubbish on TV and notice when some things have been removed (there were some racist references in early episodes of Minder, and I think that's why ITV4 don't show them).

I wonder if Allo Allo and Are You Being Served would be made today?

We're not enlightened, we're controlled. Got a West Indian friend who says all sorts about us "honkies" and we don't take offence with him but those who don't know him do look at him a bit funny. The thought police are taking more and more control. 1984 is well passed but we haven't reached it's full potential just yet. Some of the stuff kids are being drilled with these days makes me shudder and I don't know what I would do if my kids were having to go through that. Unfortunately their kids are but I keep my nose out.
