Business as usual as New Brighton awaits the next phase of resort’s success story

Posted 21 November 2014 - 4:22pm
Restaurants, attractions and businesses in New Brighton are trading as usual as work continues on the next phase of the resort’s improvement.

Since September, the Council has been carrying out a £1.3m scheme which will improve New Brighton seafront between the bottom of Victoria Parade and Rowson Street, and improve access from the promenade to the Victoria Road area of the resort. The ‘public realm’ scheme will include improvements to paving and benches along the seafront, and the removal of brickwork planters between the Queen’s Hotel and Victoria Parade to provide additional parking spaces.

The scheme will eventually enable two-way traffic to flow around the existing Town Square ‘plinth,’ and have a positive impact on businesses in Victoria Parade and Victoria Road with increased traffic and footfall.

All businesses are open as usual while construction work continues. Cllr Pat Hackett, Wirral’s Cabinet Member for the Economy, said: ‘We will get the job finished as quickly as we can, and would like to thank businesses for their continued patience and understanding while the works progress.

‘We are talking about short term pain for long term gain; upon completion the scheme will be well worth the wait and in the meantime, we’d like to urge visitors to continue to enjoy the attractions and businesses services as they did in the summer, they are all still very much open for business.’

This is the latest phase in the New Brighton success story that has seen the resort benefit from millions of pounds of public and private sector investment. This includes the £60million Marine Point www.marinepoint.co.uk development and the £12million redevelopment of the historic Floral Pavilion Theatre www.floralpavilion.com, which has become a prestigious business and leisure venue and which includes a state-of-the-art 800 seat theatre with complementary conference and meeting facilities. This has resulted in successful productions and record breaking attendances, which is expected to see visitor numbers to the theatre alone exceeding 150,000 people per year.

Never understood why they blocked off the bottom of Victoria Road in the first place especially as most of the local busnisses objected due to the negative impact it was going to have for them.

There have been changes of heart and mind over the last 40 years. Now we have renovation surpassing that ever expected again, which makes the houses with their parking bays in the middle of Victoria Road being totally out of place.

No doubt the extra parking provided with the removal of the bays on the promenade will the chargeable?

The new flats at the bottom of Victoria Road, now under construction, will have residents who enjoy living on the edge of a roundabout?

No doubt all this will crumble if standards are not maintained - like before.
