Public sector strike action- for information purposes.

Strike action by public sector employees around the country on Thursday 10th July 2014 will have a significant impact on the delivery of Council services.

Services for the public such as children’s centres, nurseries, libraries, leisure centres, One Stop Shops, day centres and schools are among those that will be affected. The strike action is part of a national dispute which includes other public services as well as local councils.

The Council has asked for a number of employees to be granted exemptions from strike action to provide an emergency response and maintain those services considered critical for public safety. However, members of the public are advised that the majority of services will not be operating in the usual manner.

Services delivered on the Council’s behalf by private contractors - such as bin collections and highway maintenance - are NOT expected to be affected by the strike action.

As of 10am on Tuesday 8th July 2014, this is an overview of the impact anticipated for Wirral (this is subject to change):

Schools

While a large number of local education authority schools are closed on Thursday, others are partially or fully open. The latest list is available below, however parents are advised to check with the school before Thursday in case of any change.

Many of the schools which will close to pupils may still be open to non-striking staff.

Children’s Centres / Nurseries

All Wirral Children’s Centres will be closed, including their associated nurseries, with the exception of private-run nurseries:

Jack and Gill’s at Seacombe Children’s Centre and
Bluebells at Bromborough Children’s Centre
Day Centres

All day centres run by Wirral’s Adult Social Services department will be closed
Parks, leisure and cemeteries

Floral Pavilion Theatre and Conference centre – the café and public toilets will be open but the Box Office will be closed
All Wirral libraries will be closed
All Wirral leisure centres will be closed
Williamson Art Gallery and Museum and The Priory will be closed
Parks – visitor centres at Wirral Country Park and Birkenhead Park will be closed and any Ranger-led events will be cancelled.
Landican Cemetery and Crematorium – no funeral services are scheduled for Thursday. Gates to the cemetery will be open but no staff will be on site.
Customer Services

All Wirral One Stop Shops will be closed
Other key details

Staff who do not wish to strike will be asked to attend an alternative place of work if their regular place of work is closed
While a number of Council buildings will be open to enable staff to work, they will not be open to the public.
Bin collections will take place as scheduled so people should leave the relevant bin out on Thursday if that is their scheduled collection day
Highway maintenance services will be unaffected by strike action
The Council has asked for a number of employees to be granted exemptions from strike action in order to provide an emergency response and maintain services considered critical for public safety, but their work will be strictly prioritised. Please only contact the Council on Thursday if it is an emergency.
The latest list of local authority schools affected is as follows:

I do hope the teachers are fined for missing days off school, like the parents do...
