After the tragic incident in Hamilton Square this week, it made me wonder what the suicide figures are, over the last few years.

They have considerably increased since 2008 after a twenty year low.

2009 5675

2010 5608 4231 men 1377 women

2011 6045 4552 men 1493 women

2012 5981

The same appears to be happening on a global scale and although studies have been done around this subject for so long now, they nearly always come up with the same answers. So this Government are putting £1.5 million into the pot for the same research purposes .

Part of one of the results from 1999 was: Lone living and unemployment.

Now I don't think those results will have changed so much really, and I despair when people who make the studies and ask the questions "why"? have never had to worry about how to pay the simplest bill in their lives and not able to conceive how not having money, can destroy and cause extreme depression, dragging the strongest of people into a pit.

Where there is no vision the people will perish.
and “Without hope, there is no despair. There is only meaningless suffering.”

It is a subject that some feel is a selfish act, but how can anyone judge unless they have been in the same situation. For those who feel that way, maybe you could sit back and listen.

If you have felt so low, could you share your thoughts, fears and reasons ? It may help somebody else.

We need to be able to support those who needs us and it would seem that in the years 2009 to 2012.... 23,309 people needed someone, in this country alone!

Can this be a subject to discuss ?

A very sobering and emotional subject. The BMJ did a study on this:

Suicides associated with the 2008-10 economic recession in England: time trend analysis
http://www.bmj.com/content/345/bmj.e5142

and concluded that there evidence was linking the increase in suicides in England with the financial crisis that began in 2008. English regions with the largest rises in unemployment have had the largest increases in suicides, particularly among men.

You have touched a sore subject granny.

it has been discussed many times before on here, often in the wrong places.

There are quite a few members here who are victims of suicide fatalitys.

For now i quote part of your comment from above....

Now, Theres the kid from birkenhead who has just recieved an asbo banning him from parts of the area due to begging.
This dude has no money obviously so he's asking for help and look what happens!
Great help that aint it?

people are so stingey these days, cant even put their hands in their pockets for a measly quid???

Exactly.

Doubt that would work, Granny. The best way to help somebody in need is to provide them with information of support available.

Wirral Mind are very good and should be used when we realise that someone needs that assistance.

Unfortunately, too often, people are not even sure whether or not the situation is at danger levels, and do not like interfering.
Sometimes, there are no outward signs at all. It's what goes on inside, that we can quite often miss.
Teenagers would probably not even be brave enough to let anyone know, or even know how to raise the issue of their traumas with anyone else.
Schools have pastoral care, but that again is quite often in the place of the scource of bullying.
Sadly, I am sure we are all guilty of shunning someone in our lives at certain times, which could well have been at the wrong moment for some.
If I could add to Ste's remark about others on here being victims of fatalities, I am extremely sad for you and your losses and hope this topic does not offend. If it does offend or upset too much, then please ask Mark to lock it.

Adding this contact again, so it doesn't get lost.
