my issue is I do not want my son to cross a picket line. I feel very strongly that as parents we should be supporting teachers in this fight, or there is a real risk that some excellent teachers will leave the profession. Crossing the picket line is usually a question of conscience for fellow workmates, not students. Do you want to pay more tax in order to pay for the teacher's pensions? Everyone else in the public sector has had to take a pension, staffing and pay hit. Why are teachers so special? The old chestnut that teachers will leave the profession is an empty threat. They won't, I guarantee it. A Guardian article recently said that 20% were leaving within five years of becoming a teacher. However, another article I dug up said that most people left for a sabbatical or to start families. Incidentally, I've not found turnout figures for this action, but last time only 40% of NUT members bothered to vote. Makes you wonder what the other 60% think.

Its only a certain union that are striking, so there will be other teachers in the same school still teaching, its not like all the teachers are on strike, so more to the point, why are the other teachers also not on strike - do they get a different deal on pensions? Without knowing all the facts, Im going to comment no further on the strike action, but I think a pupils absence is inconsequential to the actions of the teachers and their respective unions.

From what I understand:
Not all NUT members are striking
Members of other teaching unions will be working
Teachers not in any union will be working
