One wonders if it might be linked to 'fracking' in the area, i.e. if they have done any so far. It is one of the more 'desolate' areas I suppose, as opposed to the desolate areas of the North East!

The area is riddled with mines and caverns. The web link itself says: The hole, believed to be about 160ft (49m) wide and 130ft (40m) deep, was caused by mining in the area, according to landowner British Fluorspar.
