Ah Paton Close, off Gilroy. The Beirut of West Kirby. Literally the arsehole in an otherwise pleasant area. Should have guessed.

I think perhaps we should think about a family that has lost a loved one tonight instead of generalising about an area and casting aspersions on those who reside there.

Ive just signed up for this website and in the registration process this is said of stating your opinion...

"Its healthy to have a opinion in a debate which contributes to a topic,
please be considerate to others in the way you put your opinions across.
There are many different ways to say the same thing with out offending.
Abusive / Malicious opinions can offend; your account could be suspended."

I really dont think youve considered this when writing the above statement. A little narrow minded to say the least, don't you think?

I for one feel offended, and i'm sure the victims family would too.

you are probably best to not bother with this site if you get easily offended then.
Just people having their opinions.
There are riff raff everywhere and people are just pointing that out. Some poor guy has been killed by one of them and its terrible by just opening his own front door.
Have a cup a soup and get yourself a hug in a mug mate.

Apparently one of the news stations spiced this up by saying it was 5 minutes away from the school Daniel Craig attended. Like that was relevant to what happened.

A man appeared in court accused of the doorstep murder of a Wirral landscape gardener.

Wayne Smith, of Seymour Street, Birkenhead, appeared before Wirral magistrate's court in Birkenhead this morning.

The 38-year-old was last night charged with murdering Jon Britton on Paton Close, West Kirby last Tuesday.

Mr Britton, 43, died from stab wounds inflicted after he answered a knock at his door to someone at around 9.40pm that evening.

Smith, who has long dark hair, a moustache and goatee beard, wore a pair of tinted prescription swimming goggles in the dock.

They were brought up from the cells for him after the court was told Smith was short-sighted and they were the only items of eye-wear he had available.

Wearing a dark jumper and dark trousers, he spoke briefly to confirm his name, age and date of birth to the court.

After the charge was read out, chair of the bench Eileen Ashton committed Smith in custody to a bail hearing at Liverpool crown court on Tuesday December 10, which the court heard would likely take place via video link.

The case will then go before the crown court on December 23 for a preliminary hearing.

A second man, Steven Hatton, was brought into the dock after Smith to face two charges in connection with the murder.

The 23-year-old - formerly of Elmswood Road, Birkenhead - gave a new address to the court of Newlands Road, Bebington.

He was charged with assisting an offender by providing a false alibi for Smith in a statement.

He was also charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice through providing the false alibi, and by concealing clothing worn by the murder suspect.

Hatton, who wore glasses and was sporting a short beard, was supporting in court by three members of his family.

The former Cammell Laird's engineer sat with his head bowed in the dock as the charges were read out.

After retiring to consider an application for bail by Hatton's solicitor Chris Williams, the magistrates granted it until his next appearance subject to a string of condition.

He was bailed until the morning of December 23 for a preliminary hearing at the crown court.

Until that time Hatton was instructed not to contact any of the witnesses, told to live and sleep at an address on Newlands Road and put on an electronically-tagged curfew from 5pm to 7am.

Police investigations into the murder of Mr Britton yesterday saw officers searching Grange Cemetery, near to the murder scene, which remained sealed off this morning.

A cordon was also in place outside an address on Elmswood Road.

Mr Britton, described by neighbours as a “quiet and friendly man”, ran his own gardening business and played guitar with Wirral band Mines and Countermines.

He was also a trustee at Hoylake Lifeboat Museum, where colleagues spoke of him as "one of life's true gentleman" and "a joy to work with and to know".
