SOLANDGE is a charter yacht, lots of people have been photographing it from the Priory Tower.

Apparently they have covered its name up at Cammell Laird, but there are so many reports and photos on shipping web sites it's pointless everyone knows it's there and the name.

She apparently has a damaged prop shaft which may have happened when she was in Manx waters last week. Manx fishermen have been blamed on more than one occasion for leaving gear around which has damaged the Isle of Man Steam Packet's BEN MY CHREE. Perhaps something similar happened to SOLANDGE?

Actually its mine, on the way through the Irish Sea, the electrostatic hull protective system detected a barnacle near the keel, so I ordered it into Camel Lairds to have it removed. Also the grape peeler was inoperative and needs replacing under guarantee.

Can I ask where you were when you were told off by a security guard? Why I am asking is that a contact of mine was up St. Mary's Tower at Birkenhead Priory yesterday taking photographs and was shouted at by men on top of a crane on the Cammell Laird side of the wall for taking photos.

During the course of the week a plastic sheet has been placed over the yacht's name to dry and hide its identity to visitors to the Priory. However, the observant, with telephoto lenses or binoculars can still read the name off the life rings.

Fact is if you are in a public place you cannot be stopped from taking photos and most people going up the tower probably do take photos of the wonderful views. The tower is well used by shipping enthusiasts.

If anyone does get shouted at for taking photos from this location I suggest you inform them politely of your rights to take photographs from a public place.

Goodness knows. The secrecy and behaviour is only making people more curious. The SOLDANGE actually crossed from Douglas to Birkenhead with her AIS transmitter turned off.

For those that don't know AIS is a system which shows the position of commercial shipping and even some smaller pleasure vessels. The data is visible on various web sites including the local ShipAIS web site.

The only vessels which usually switch their AIS off are warships which for understandable security reasons do not wish to be seen!

For a commercial vessel to do so is rather unusual.

Some photographs of SOLANDGE with her name covered can be found at:

Missed your edited post that includes pics. Thanks.
May go the Priory tomoz for a nose/ take pics.

I wonder if somebody political had chartered her? Cant see anybody else of 'importance' who could request no AIS?? think

Remember the guys at Fort Perch Rock saying ships need clearance to enter the Mersey in advance.
Obvs. emergencys happen but then to 'sneak in'? It is all very odd!

Did you have to sign some sort of Confidentiality Agreement? Or can't you say?
