I'm just wondering if anyone knows how the cocoa rooms / coffee taverns token system worked?
Did customers convert their money into tokens to ensure they would not be tempted to go off and spend their cash in the pub? Or were the tokens handed out by the temperance movement to get people to use the cocoa rooms / coffee taverns?

I remember when I was a kid and people were arguing they would threaten their opponent that they would put a lip on them like a cocoa room cup, so they must have had pretty thick cups.

If you look in the link in my last post, you'll see that pubs used the token system too. I suspect, but have no proof, that the cocoa rooms adopted the same system. I daresay bartering took place: "Swap you a Red Lion for a King's Head".
