Spring Classics Challenge from Specialized

Ride 1,319 kilometers in the month of April.01/04/2013 — 30/04/2013

While the world’s best professional cyclists are hammering up the bergs and bouncing over the cobblestones, Specialized and Strava challenge you to ride the cumulative distance of five of cycling’s most storied races that form the Spring Classics, adding up to a monumental total of 1,319 kilometers or 820 miles.

For those curious, here is how the math works out:

Milan-San Remo  [298km] +
Tour of Flanders [256km] +
Paris-Roubaix [257km] +
Liège–Bastogne–Liège [257km] +
Amstel Gold [251km] = 1,319 kilometers

There are milestone badges to be earned at 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%, so set yourself a weekly Progress Goal  of 330km's (or greater) and show us what you're made of!Less

The task now is to average 27 miles per day, so to make it easier i'll be trying to ramp more miles in on the following days;

Tuesday: Palefish ride with a road club = 40 miles
Thursday: Delamere ride = 60 miles or Palefish 40 dependent in weather and time on the day
Saturday and Sunday will be either a ride to Degla, Delamere or local routes. Will try and bank 65-75 per day.

As a log I have taken my weight this morning at 16 stone, will be aiming for something beginning with 14 come 31st April.

All this will be done on the new FS bike, once parts turn up for the single speed I will be using that for some mileage.

Are any other WikiWirral users taking part?

Thanks for reading.

Phil

Sure am, trained constantly for over 2 years now with an average mileage of 130-140 miles per week on the MTB.

Just need to make sure I keep an eye on fluid intake during rides and make sure I have enough salt intake to stop cramps on rides over 50 miles.

I'll tag along with you on a few rides on a Saturday if you want company, I may hold you back a bit though as I have been a wimp this year and hardly ridden at all.

Thanks Mark, 2 days and 100 miles bounced in.

Sure they are salt cramps? Seat position is a big key, to low and it causes muscle tension :-(

Sure Head Coat Mrs, I will be posting a topic for a "Wikiwirral Coast Ride". Most likley 20 miles at a pace to suit everyone.

Had a cracking ride with Palefish cycling club, I think they were shocked at seeing a full suspension mtb keeping up on the road :-)

All good fun as after all, regardless of wheel size/width we all enjoy getting out.

Also Thanks Mark for the Cycling Mod job

Well just over 2 weeks in and I am 40% into the challenge.

Had a few slow days due to my Father being in hospital so he has been more important.

Weighed my self on Monday and I tipped the scales at 15.6 so i'm happy with that as the miles I have done are below...

Got a few large rides coming up to bulk some miles from now till Sunday.

Llandegla loop tomorrow (65 miles)
Delamere loop Thursday (60 miles)
Llandegla loop Saturday (60 miles)
Palefish Ride Sunday, will try and hit the 100.

New wheel bearings are getting fitted Thursday night as well as Jockey Wheels. Other than that the bike is ready to go still. Still on off road tyres aswell.

I wish Moonster, still a big lad just built up the endurance for longer rides.

I am awful for short sharp bursts. Just need to decide a diet and stick to it.

Binned Llandegla off due to wind as it isn't safe like this. Went for a pootle to Eastham and back and that was bad enough.

If my wheel bearings and bottom bracket bearings come before 10am I will fir them and try Llandegla & Delamere in a day. Only if I have time. I expect only Delamere night ride.

Bit of an update, rode Llandegla Saturday which turned out to be a 30 mile trip from a train station on the way to Wrexham.

Was a cracking solo rode as I haven't been there for over a month due to snow etc.

Then on Sunday I joined Palefish Cycling Club for a road ride.

Donned the usual MTB attire. Shorts, T Shirt and camelback and set off at 6.30am.

Met my mate at McDonalds in Charing cross at 7am for a pre Double Sausage and Egg McMuffin meal (Phil need food to ride)

Waitied at the tunnel enterance at 7.30am and the group turned up.

Blog is here....

http://palefishbikes.blogspot.co.uk/2013/04/palefish-cross-mersey.html

Was good keeping up with the Lycra roadies on a mahoosive full susser. Made them work harder seeing a muppet keeping up lol.

Really need to try a road bike but I don't do lycra so naa Phil will be stayin on the treads for the for seeable future.

Had a blinding ride however the frame snapped on me...

So sent it back for a replacement.

However built up my old hardtail to ride with...

[Linked Image]

Popped a few miles since Tuesday (135 since Tuesday). Joined Palefish again for a Thursday training ride.

Left mine at 6.30pm to meet at 7.30pm, done a full on intense ride to West Kirby to get warded up then met the guys and gals at the 12th Man in Greasby.

I then noticed a wheel big problem. My rim had split on the rear wheel. So joined the ride anyway. Went to New Brighton then round the coast to Birkenhead. Once there it was to much, wheel was goosed...

So departed the group and left for home.

Now to fit the other wheel I have and get prepped for Saturday for a well over 100mile ride.

Carb bulk up tomorrow night and a 7am start Saturday.

Thanks for reading.

Oh and also rode 994km this month up to now over 21 rides :-)

Smashed out my largest ride yet.

Left mine at 7am to start the ride to Delamere, was there for 8.30.

We then made our way to Wrexham via Beeston, was a long winded flat trip and had a bite to eat in a Garden Centre cafe near Demon Tweeks at 10.30

Stopped off in Wrexham town centre and fell off due to the new SPD's not releasing and cut my knee open (******).

We then made our way to Llangollen, was a long trip to get there (or felt like it). Had a few mins rest and ate some flapjack before hitting the Horse Shoe Pass.

Well what can I say apart from 30 minutes of hell from Llangollen to the Pondarosa. The hill never lets off. Glad I never stopped as I was determained to get up in one go. My mate beat me by 3 mins. Once I try a road bike I think we will be on par.

Quick screen shot of the trip....

Now for a few beers and a bacon and egg buttie.

Up early for a Slick 50 with a road club.

Thanks for reading.

Phil

p.s 89% of the challenge done :-)
