Next year's Wirral egg run is cancelled because of lack of sponsorship, fair enough. But for the police and Wirral council to say that they will take strong measures against anybody attempting to stage an unofficial run reeks of Big Brother to me.If anyone can get the organisation in place let them do it!

I think the issue would be the safety of other road users as well as the 10-12,000 bikers themselves. With the number of Officers due to be cut, from response/area and RPU, it would be dangerous. All it takes is 2 RTC's and mayhem would ensue if they're serious. There simply aren't enough RPU to cover that and normal traffic.

It is sad (I'm an ex biker & marshalled the Egg Run), but what is more important - the ride out or the safety of everyone concerned?

The laugh is that those strong measures would cost money that they say they haven't got. It's about time the council started spending money on worthwhile things like the egg run and stopped bleeding money to themselves (look at councillor expenses) and all the other lost causes they sponsor. If the council are so concerned. charge a £1 to every biker to get on the prom. No-one would mind paying, it would cover the Police costs, and the excess could go to charity. There is always a way to get things done but Wirral council have NEVER been interested. It's easier to cancel or demolish their problems.

Hi Wench, you seem to be clued up on the police so could you please explain to me why they would be prepared to officiate at an event organised by a registered charity but apparently not prepared to officiate at an identical event organised by well meaning ,law abiding individuals. Is it too late for me to buy a motorbike and an Easter bunny suit?

How much does it cost to stage the egg run ,charge asalready suggested and also get people to marshal for free and am sure the plastic plod would help out .or even stop the council from spending the money on stuff for them selves ,oh and company cars that they don't need .

I agree, but it still doesn't change the fact that no matter how much they charged the bikers, you can't conjure up Police that don't exist. No matter how much the costs would be covered, there just won't be enough Officers to keep it safe. It's only going to get worse!

I've already written about the fact that at any given time, there is only one or two RPU available for the whole of Merseyside. A fact that local MP's and some high ranking Officers were not aware of. Between numbers being cut by our wonderful* government and the creeping in of privatisation, things like the Egg Run just aren't a priority.

Approach the recently elected** PCC is my advice.

**If you can class it as that considering the number of people that did vote!

No idea as I don't know what event you are talking about. No idea who decides which events they can and can't attend. I'm not job I'm afraid. Even if I was, I wouldn't be privy to the workings of the upper echelons (or could REMF's apply to them*).

*tongue firmly in cheek of course.

Please do not turn up on the 17th March 2013 or make plans for your own version of the event. You will cause irreparable harm to the charity and all the Trustees and Committee members would ask that all our wonderful supporters show their solidarity by accepting the brief hiatus and getting behind the Charity in making 2014 a year not to forget. It is vital everyone adheres to this. Police have advised that access to hospitals etc will be restricted on the 17th. Further the NHS have advised they will not accept any donations that are not from the registered Charity. We above anyone else understand the frustration of our supporters but at the same time we have a duty to ensure the continuation of the event into the future. Illegal versions would be unhelpful and potentially damaging.

Please help us ensure the future of this worthwhile event by supporting the hiatus and working with us rather than against us.

According to Headcoat they won't accept any donation that isn't from a registered charity, that rather narrows their funding opportunities doesn't it?
