Hi mate, I have the 100 meg service. For Internet virrgin is head and shoulders above any other provider. The new vdsl is good from bt (about 80 down and 30 up) but it will cost you over 50 quid and you will have a download cap.

Finally if you get the 60 meg service you will get a free upgrade to 100 in October next year.

Also with virgin, as stated above their internet service is second to none, the Tivo boxes can take a bit to get used to and also be a bit sluggish at times, but once you get past that they are also actually very good as they have their own dedicated internet connection at 10mb, which lets you use apps such as youtube on your TV, they also have a huge on demand and catch up service too.

I needed to get Virgin Media installed in a new flat I was renting out, because of the deals it worked out cheaper to get the basic phone line and TV as well, even if you don't use it, because of the discounts they give on packages.

The package I had was the 120MB line plus basic TV and phone.
This works out at just under £43 per month
Make sure you choose paperless billing and pay by direct debit, this will save you around £7 per month.
When I ordered it Virgin were giving £50 cash back for new customers.
I also went through QuidCo as a cash back site, which gave me another £145 back

This was a 12m contract so it works out at (£43 x 12) - (£50 + £145) = £321

£321 / 12 = £26.75 pm

That's for incredibly fast unlimited Internet, you can of course get it cheaper by using a slower service.

I have the same thing at home, and I use Vonage for my phone line, a normal phone, a normal number but it uses my broadband to make the calls (VOIP) this costs around £4 a month, but all my landline calls are included, as long as I want, anytime, and if you refer someone, you both get 2m free as well.

I’m not going to go too technical here.. But cable will always be better than ADSL (Internet through your telephone).

It’s one thing that really annoys me when ADSL companies (Like BT, Sky, Talktalk) advertise 20mb broadband, when you don’t actually get anything near that.. yet you still pay for it..

For example, you pay for 20mb.. then depending on how far you live away from the exchange, that could then be halved.. to 10mb.. but ADSL also has a contention ratio (for sky its 50:1).. so with a 50:1 contention ratio, you’re fighting 50 people to get that 10mb.. which means you usually end up with like 4-5mb.. Yet your still getting charged for 20mb..

With Cable, you have Fibre Optic cable to the green box at the end of your road, then copper cable to your door, which means the loss of strength is minimal! But the key thing is you’re on a 1:1 contention ratio.. which means you’re not fighting anyone for your internet! I have 20mb Internet, and usually get about 19-21mb some evenings (Yes I can download as sometimes over 2mb a second some nights!).

So for me, cable (Virgin in this case) is simply the way forward, not just for value for money, but if you’re into the techie side, they also have a better upload speed than ADSL companies too.

OFCOM should really intervene with ADSL companies to make sure you only pay for the maximum internet speed you can get!

Shenn

My experience with Virgin doesn't seem to be as good as everybody elses. All was fine until I moved house...it took them three weeks for them to come out and connect us (for the people who moved into my old house it took them three days to get connected, maybe because they were a new customer!!)
I have the 30 meg broadband but the speed varies between 4mb and 11 mb. I've never got 30mg.
An engineer came out today to check the power levels on the modem but that was fine and now they say there is a problem in the area and it maybe fixed in the next week or so but were a bit vague.
I've lived here two months now and the connection has always been bad and don't get me started on TIVO. Its awful! I was so excited at getting Tivo as it was meant to be the best thing since sliced bread but its terrible. Its really slow when changing channels, catch up TV constantly buffers. When I hire films it just crashes half way through so you have to go back to the start and the fast forward is just double speed. VCRs where better than that!!
Sorry, rant over now but it was good to get it off my chest smile
