Squatting in a residential building in England and Wales becomes a criminal offence on Saturday, meaning squatters would face jail or a fine.

It follows a government consultation on the issue last summer.

sitting on the fence on this one, surely this is a formn of peaceful protest or could be seen that way though people would abuse it hence the addition of a new law

About time. The whole idea that someone could legally occupy, or have any "rights" whatsoever to someone else's property or home, was quite frankly, ridiculous.

on the plus side if they were jailed at least they would have a bed, food, heating and possibly get educated....all for free if they didn;t have the fine of £5000 to pay and lets face it if you were a squatter what are the chances of them having £5000 to pay a fine?????

Some so-called "squatters" have been perfectly well-off and could have afforded to pay for a place to live, just like all the rest of us, but were just doing it because they could, to keep more of their own money. grrrrr!

There are squatters down London who work and are well off yet they take advantage of the squatters rights laws.

I think this is a little unfair on the people who genuinely don't have any money to pay for where they live. This could cause more problems.

It should apply to working people only.

What I loved about the NBC report on it was that one of the squatters was happily tapping away on a MacBook pro.......
