My car has been off the road since Christmas as I've been working away and had no need for it. But now I'm back and will need it again. What am I allowed to do with regards to driving it to its MOT without tax or insurance? I believe that you can drive a car to its MOT without tax and with insurance to then get the tax, but am I able to drive it with nothing if I was to tax and MOT it immediately?

To MOT you need insurance
To apply for tax you need MOT and insurance
If you cancel your insurance you need to SORN your car

DVLA making it difficult much?

To drive to the MoT with no existing MoT and/or tax it must be pre-booked -You must have insurance. This is valid for that journey, and the return, even if you fail.

To tax the car you must have insurance, MoT and LogBook (or reminder) or green slip if you have only had the car a short time - You can still be prosecuted for no tax even if you are driving to the Post Office to get it.

If you apply for tax online you are covered straightaway, although the only grace period is five days from the expiry of the old disc, or SORN, if you have applied for the new one.

If there has been a long period since it was taxed you can still be prosecuted for failure to display, but it'd take a very bored bobby to go to the bother.

Any vehicle used, OR KEPT, on a public road must be insured at all times. If there is no insurance then you must SORN the vehicle AND return the tax disc, even if it has NIL value.

You cannot keep a tax disc on a SORNed vehicle even if you intend to use it a few months later or it is only a summer car.

If you have no tax, or no insurance, or no MoT the police can seize your car if you drive it.

No MoT - Fine of up to £1000, this is non endorceable (no points)
No Tax - Fine of up to £2500, also no endorceable
No Insurance - Fine of up to £5000, 6-8 points and a discretionary disqualification.

There is more but that covers some of the new legislation smile

To get an MOT without tax and without the vehicle being insured is possible. Someone, other than the registered owner of the car, could drive it using their insurance (check their insurance certificate first, it would only be third party cover though). As mentioned in previous posts, make sure you're booked in for an MOT and that you have written proof when travelling to the testing station that the car is booked in.

As others have said, to get tax you must have the vehicle insured and a valid MOT.

Wrong...

The vehicle MUST have its own insurance before ANYONE can drive it
The only exception is Trade Plates

some one else can not drive it on there insurance, the car has to be insured, for some one else to be able to drive it on there insurance

Tony beat me to it

Some temp insurance companies, allowe you to use it to tax your vehicle, but only if you request certificate through post £2.50 charge,
But you would probs have to get the temp insurance for 1 week, that way when you get certificate you can use it to tax vehicle.

Agreed.

You used to be able to do this many years ago, and a lot of people think that you still can, but the car MUST have insurance in its own right, and some policies won't allow you to drive anything else third party even if it does, so be aware.

Years ago you could insure yourself on a Mini then drive around in a Cosworth because it wasn't in your name, this doesn't work anymore.

Or insure with Morethan and then cancel and you won't get a cancellation fee (like other companies)
