Google the number, theres a website called 'who calls me', often identifies unknown numbers. I got a call before from an odd number myself and it turned out to be cold callers, wishing to assist with p.p.i repayments.

As per Rude's comment above, go to http://whocallsme.com/ and type in the number, anybody else who has had a call from these people will usually have left a comment.

Had this problem once drove me mad, found out my phone had a security feature where if you held the volume down button it mimicked an incoming call the display showed no number just unknown the case my phone was in was pushing on the volume down button, could be a possibility.

if you do 1471 does the timestamp corrospond with the time of the call or is it an earlier one?

This will be just an automatated number, their computer randomly calls numbers and if somebody answers it relies on one of their operators being available to talk to the "victim". Just ignore it. Of course if it happens during the night it is a blessed nuisance and your only recourse is to leave the phone unplugged or switched off as appropriate.

I registered with TPS - last summer but was not charged. I think I might have asked for a few months on this service. However, this did not stop the power dialer numbers ringing at random. It also did not stop some banks or PPI. When I mentioined TPS to them they did take note and some stopped calling.

The TPS scheme is free! http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/tps/whatistps.htmlI've been on it for a while. It filters out 99.9% of the bottom dwellers that call you. Just the occasional one that slips through.

TPS only works (and not perfectly anyway) when the number dialling is in UK. It can do nothing at all for numbers dialled from call centres or by computers that are based outside UK. Lots tend to come from centres in India or Philiipines. We were plagued by these calls - which seem to come at a peak of around 5-7pm, and a few early morning!!!)- but a new phone with a nice Caller Number Display and a relatively short (3 rings) activation of the voicemail message seems to have dramatically cut the number of such calls. The voicemail message is a fake ie it indicates that the caller has reached the number of a business (totally bogus name which for fun I cange periodically) and that "if you leave a message and number we may get back to you". Almost always the phone call ends INSTANTLY at that point. All of friends have been warned of this message and to just ignore it and leave a voicemail as normal. Our friends also know that because of the short (3 rings) before voicemail kicks in we are likely listening anyway and that soon as they start to speak on voicemail we will pick up the phone. So much so that friends now start voicemail messages with such as "Hello Snod are you there? This is XXX" shift yer bum and answer" or something similar. Our friends are like that! We have a few friends who call from places in other continents and Caller Display does not always work with their calls so I cannot just block witheld numbers or No Caller ID Set up I have works fine so far as we are concerned. Another approach could be http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A79RQZWArR8&feature=endscreenSnod
