Hi,i`m new to the site, and i`d like to start by saying it`s an excellent site for information,i just cant believe it`s taken this long to come across it.

Anyway,i`ve always lived close to Landican and have spent alot of time walking there over the years from back as a kid.I`m not an expert by any means but theres not many places over there that i dont know of.Last night i read a topic about the rivers Fender and Birkett and a supposed saxon bridge in the landican area and also one about the markings on the stones in roman road,in the discussion about the bridge somebody posted a painting of the bridge(someone also posted photos).I knew the scene but had never realised the bridge was supposedly saxon so,this morning i went over to get a better look and get some pics.

I got to the bridge and had a good look around and i think its been rebuilt at some point using the old stone, and one side of the bridge has been repaired using concrete, but what i found interesting was the stone had very simillar markings as the stone posts in roman road.In the original topic about the stones Bert1 suggested the marks are from the masons tools and i agree with that opinion but would they be intentional marks as in a decoration,or a signiture of sorts or are they just from crude tools and a heavy handed mason??
There are lots of old posts over Landican and they all seem to have the markings but i couldn`t see any of the markings on smaller pieces of stone around there which i assume are the remains of walls, they`re just on the posts and the bridge.

As i was heading home i walked up through landican village to go down roman road and i noticed the marks again in the village,on the stone of the grange farm buildings, and also on the some of the stone on the big house next to the saddle club and on the saddle club itself.

I know it`s abit of a long winded post but i hope it`s of interest to someone,as i found it interesting that the same marks on the bridge and the posts are on some of the oldest buildings in an ancient area.

My brother and I went on the golf course near Roman rd and there is a big clump of bushes and trees,in the bushes is a road with what looks like wagon wheel tracks[I think that what it looks like to me]any how it is strange to see some thing like that in the middle of a golf course..

Would you believe up Landican lane? Opposite Asda at one end and Thingwall roundabout at the other. Blink and you miss it.

Roman Road is in Storeton. I don't think it's actually a Roman Road though. But, nobody knows for sure.

The Storeton end of Roman Road is muddy as hell in the winter and quite often in summer too. Best to go there in wellies or wait until it's good and dry.

Maybe the Romans had gladiatorial golf buggies... (just a thought).

But is it really Saxon? Lol!

There's already a lot of stuff been said about this on the River Fender thread. Includes some nice maps and pictures from bert1 and derekdwc:
