Just saw the ambulance and fire brigade incident support units heading to the Wirral on blues through the Birkenhead tunnel. Anyone know what's happening?

There's an incident at central roundabout, couldn't see anything due to being stuck about half a mile back!

The Flyover at Central Roundabout is shut heading towards the tunnel causing traffic, there is also a two car incident on the New Ferry Bypass, and there is also specialist support units racing up the A41 away from Birkenhead, went past Bromborough to where I don't know.

It said on the radio the incident at Central roundabout is due to a gas leak so the flyover into the tunnel has been closed.

Firefighters Called To Incident

Tuesday, 28 February 2012
Power Road, Bromborough.
Firefighters were called out after reports of a chemical incident.

Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service was called at 8am to the SAFC site in Power Road, Bromborough, on the Wirral.

A Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) unit from Bromborough Community Fire Station also responded to the call-out.

A man, aged approximately 45-years-old, was treated by paramedics and taken to hospital with burns.

At this stage it is believed a small amount of chemical reacted with water.

The incident was being scaled down by 8.53am and firefighters were finished at the scene by 8.54am.

There is no further chemical risk from this incident.

A fire engine from Bromborough Community Fire Station and one from Birkenhead Community Fire Station also attended the call-out.

Quite regularly the area by Central Station stinks of gas and it is very strong.

Gas board have been out a few times checking the area, it is quite disturbing I think as a spark from one of the eleccy trains could blow the whole area up, lol

I wonder if it is from the old gasworks there ... Is it still in use?
