is the RSPCA the thing you'd be up for?

there's one at cross lane, wallasey if you wanted to go down and have a chat with them.

The Wirral Rangers organise volunteers to maintain Thurstaston and other areas. I've done it a few times and they are always very welcoming to new comers and you only do as much or as little as you want.
Contact them via the council website.

I have done some stuff with these people:

www.wirralwildlife.co.uk

Counting rodents etc (to make sure there's enough to feed the predators - not Rentokil!), and I've been around the Butterfly Park, they were looking for helpers to maintain the area.

You could try:

How about the birdies?

http://www.rspb.org.uk/localgroups/details.aspx?id=200

Ness Gardens also have volunteers for all different areas within the gardens(in fact they couldn't survive without them)
