At least 73 people have been killed and 1,000 injured after a football pitch invasion in Egypt, according to officials.

Clashes are said to have broken out as fans flooded the field seconds after the game in the northern coastal city of Port Said finished. Some reports say the death toll is as high as 73.
There are reports of rocks, bottles, flares and fireworks being thrown.
Fans of the home team, Al Masry, swarmed the field after a rare 3-1 win against Al Ahly, Egypt's top team.
It is being described as the worst disaster in the history of Egyptian football.
Khalil Fahmy, Sky News Arabia correspondent, said police had been heavily criticised for doing nothing to intervene at the ground.

Egypt's top team, Al Ahly, were playing in Port Said

He said: "Many people were crying for help, for police or army intervention. They spent almost an hour without any army or police protection - this resulted in the bad injuries of hundreds of people.
"Most of the dead were killed by head injuries."
As details of the violence emerged, a football match in Cairo, 200km (125 miles) away, was called off in mourning and television footage showed sections of the stadium on fire. An announcer said the blazes had been started by fans angry over the cancellation.
Some players in Port Said were taken to a locker room for protection, reports said.
Military helicopters have reportedly been sent in on an emergency evacuation to pull Al Ahly fans and players out of the confrontation amid fears they face attack.
A Port Said medic said some of the dead were security officers.
The country's football federation has now "indefinitely delayed" all premier league matches, the state prosecutor has called for an investigation and the country's parliament is to convene for an emergency meeting on Thursday.
There are suggestions of a political dimension to the incident, with Egyptian Islamists blaming supporters of Hosni Mubarak - who was ousted as president in Egypt revolution a year ago - for provoking the violence.

Watching it, I'd say it was nothing to do with football. And to think the world says English fans are bad no

Football prohibited in Islam says Egypt sheikh

Spokesman of the Salafi Preaching Movement in the country, Sheikh Abdul Moneim al-Shahat, who lost an attempt to enter parliament, said in a speech on Monday that those who were killed in Port Said stadium, did not sacrifice their lives for God.

"They were not in a war fighting for God, they were just having fun. This fun distracts Muslims from worshipping God," he said in the sermon he gave at a mosque in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria.

Shahat added that the "fun" which victims sought when they went to the stadium is "forbidden in Islam."

The comments have sparked somewhat sarcastic remarks from activists on the ground in Cairo over the past few days, as clashes that had erupted following the violence, which saw security forces fail to intervene to stop the bloodshed in Port Said, calm.

"If this wasn't such a sad moment, I think we could all laugh at the man's statements," said 16-year-old Ultra fan Mahmoud, who told Bikyamasr.com on Tuesday as a truce between protesters and police seemed to be holding, that "I had friends die in the attack. I am from Port Said, and this guy is crazy. I wish he would be quiet."

But Shahat continued to reveal the only three sports permissible in Islam.

"Only three sports are allowed in Islam: shooting, swimming, and horseback riding. Other sports are forbidden," he added.

Shahat continued to say that football is a sport imported from the West and criticized football players who join foreign clubs.

"Unfortunately, like in the West, football players play in foreign clubs and get very high salaries while many scholars are struggling to make ends meet."

Money spent on football, Shahat argued, should go instead to Qur'an recitation competitions.

Shahat has not shied away from controversy in recent months. Last year, he spoke out about the idea of covering statues in the country, describing them as "idols." He also called the writings of late Egyptian Nobel Laureate for Literature Naguib Mahfouz "prostitution literature."

Is it just me or has the recent news posted on Wiki seem to have an anti Islam / racist theme? Surely Wiki is a place to comment but not a place to further a prejudiced and biased agenda to promote racial hatred?
Just thought but there are bad people everywhere and they should be punished but posting every negative story you can find regarding Asian people is not proportional.
Remember Great British history is filled with episodes we can't be proud of - we interfered in a great many countries where we should have left well alone. Don't forget most of the impressive building in Liverpool, Bath and London were build on the proceeds of the Slave trade.

It's not just you. This asshole above joined because his friend (ProudInfidelNS) asked him to yesterday because he couldn't defend his feelings on the EDL without another 'patriot' helping him.
