Doing a bit of gardening, which brought this one back into my mind. Hope you like it. Fiddled about with it for ages and only mentioned the word'fairy'once! laugh

The Oak

We stood a little, then walked bye,
Heads rose up to see the sky,
And in a glimpse, warm shafts of light,
Streamed through the oak trees of great height.

Tall and strong, who would believe,
From tiny acorns grew these trees?
Ancient tales they can reveal,
Of battles, wars, and men in steel.

Gnarled, old branches laden down,
Autumn leaves, in gold and brown;
Twisted fingers beckon me,
With rustling, whispers from this tree.

Lean your back against the trunk,
Think about the hooded monk,
Who meditated for a while,
As he walked his leafy mile.

Myths and legends, stories told
Of Robin Hood, in days of old;
And fairy homes have always been,
Where these ancient trees are seen.

A solid mass of warmth and life
Has suffered from much toil and strife;
And when it’s strength is sapped and low,
Boughs may break, but new shoots grow.

Along our paths of places new,
Our guardian, towers, to watch us go;
Mystical moonbeams offer hope
And bless our lonely friend, dear Oak.

Now at last, we praise this tree
That teaches lost simplicity;
Courageous strength, majestic style,
To guide us through our weary mile.

Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect.

Lovely poem, granny, it gave me a warm and fuzzy feeling inside. These are the kind of poems I like best, the ones that take us away from all the troubles of the world. Thanks again granny.

Thank you Dave. Just a bit more time wasting, as our minds wander. All good fun and it doesn't really matter how bad it might be, as we are not competing with Wordsworth on here! laugh

I know exactly what you mean, granny. Over the last 40 years I must have literally written thousands of poems but most of them wouldn't be good enough to use as toilet paper, let alone anything else. Many are filled with so much doom and gloom they sound like the ramblings of a manic depressive. On the plus side, that's what I like about writing poetry; we write the way we're feeling at the time so it is kind of like a snapshot of the mood we were in when we wrote it. So, even though the poem might be meaningless to others, it holds a special significance to us, the writer.

I've said it before on these forums, I'm not a fan of non-rhyming poetry. On one occasion at creative writing, we were asked to write a non-rhyming poem. I had a go but I wasn't happy with the results, even though my tutor said it had a lot of potential. I might post it on here if I can pluck up the courage (Watch this space!).

How many of us know the phrase "Days of wine and roses"? Here's where it comes from.

VITAE SUMMA BREVIS SPEM NOS VETAT INCOHARE LONGAM
(The brief sum of life denies us the hope of enduring long - Horace)
They are not long, the weeping and the laughter,
Love and desire and hate:
I think they have no portion in us after
We pass the gate.
They are not long, the days of wine and roses:
Out of a misty dream
Our path emerges for a while, then closes
Within a dream.

Had no idea where it came from Chriskay.Thanks for posting such a lovely poem.

There comes a point , when I think we all realise how brief our beautiful life truly is.

Thinking about it, there must be hundreds of films, songs, plays and tv shows originally inspired by poetry

...like The Darling Buds of May; Jabberwocky; Xanadu and Cats

There once was an old man of Esser,
Whose knowledge grew lesser and lesser,
It at last grew so small
He knew nothing at all,
And now he's a college professor.

I'm not a pheasant plucker
I'm a pheasant plucker's son
And I wont stop plucking pheasants
'Til my pheasant plucking's done!
