I was going to buy the book from Amazon but would rather 'risk' the price of library reservation -80p. The reviews on Amazon seem ok. I'll certainly try to 'stick it out'! Finally picked up 'Roots' the other day. (Somebody hired it the day I reserved it). Anyway, it is easy to read. Very powerful but fully recommended to anybody who may have seen the series/ boxset. I remember when I first read that book, couldn't put it down, it was one of those "read through the night" ones because I was just so into it. I think after that it was Shogun (van Lustbader ?)

I just finished the last of Chris Kuzneski's books, kind of historical/treasure hunter based action/detective/puzzle/mystery type thrillers. All well worth getting (1p from marketplace each I think).

My Life With the Taliban by Abdul Salam Zaeef.
Basically its a focused autobiography of the author who was a senior member of the Taliban and spent time in Guantanamo (he was released without charge or trial after 4.5 years) & is translated from Pashto.
Pretty interesting read for anyone wanting to know the history of Afghanistan (and Pakistan) and the Taliban and the mindset of the people that supported and helped the Taliban come to power in the 90's. It's not apologetic like a lot of other books on the same subject, but does have some focus on the good things the Taliban did for Afghanistan during that time. I'm not sure if there has been any other books written by a senior Talib, it's been a really good read.

Just finished reading "Broke Through Britain" by Peter Mortimer. A story of the author's walk from Plymouth to Edinburgh. He carried no money, no food and took his King Charles Spaniel with him.
He wasn't a scrounger. He wanted to see if people would give shelter and some food to a total stranger in these days of me me me! Interesting to see the people who shunned him and turned him away and those who freely gave him shelter and some food. The latter ranging from a piece of chocolate to a full blown meal, drinks and treated as one of the family. Having the door slammed in his face at a Rectory to being accepted by the most humble of folk. He didn't thumb lifts at all, but did accept offers of a lift to the edge of towns to resume his walk north.
One of the few books I've read of late that is difficult to put down. Highly recommended !

Fire Strike 79 by Grahame and Damien Lewis - can't put it down!! It's literary porn for me as it's about the job I wanted to do (JTAC) and the mere mention of GIMPY's, CRV7's and JDAM's being fired from some serious plane and helo porn gives me goosebumps Just reading the bit where Bommer gets "MRE Bombed" and I'm in stitches (apart from the fact it temporarily deafened him) In hot..................Stores
