I was wondering whether anyone had any recollection of Menlo Cottage. It where Budworth close is now. I know it was knocked down in the 70's I think for new houses. Would be nice to see if there are any pictures around or if there are any peoples memories of the place.

I had read a report on Noctorum Ridge which is interesting but doesnt mention Menlo, and I have seen some Francis Firth pictures which don't have Menlo in the collection.

This is a picture of Menlo cottage/lodge which is still standing. It is actually in Menlo close and surrounded by newer houses. They must of built around this house at the time of building the new houses

This is the area on a normal map. The red circle is the old gate post and the blue circle is the lodge/cottage. Just shows how big the premises must have been!

I am going to post some more information requests on Noctorum Ridge later on. If anyone is interested in some of the old houses on the ridge, this is an interesting conservation report dated 2007:

There was a house on Budworth Road called Inscott it's now knocked down and Budworth close is I think where it was.
The house used to belong to Ethel Austin, discount clothing retailer.

Yeh. Most of them are still there. Gorsefield has been knocked down, but the lodge is still there on Noctorum lane. The Uplands was knocked down a few years ago and is now replaced with large detached houses.

Tyron is interesting on Budworth Road. There is a Victorian Dump map somewhere on here which shows Tyron and the area around it being part of their dumps on the Wirral. Ill try and find it and put it on here.

Thanks for that. I think plot 233 was where the house called Inscott.
To the left of the house shows a huge lawn which we used to play croquet on in the 1970's

Inscott. Ive never heard of that one before. That will be where new houses are now and Wexford Close. So where you played croquet would be on the corner of Budworth Road?

I have studied your map and the property looks like it may be "Firdene" which is located between Menlow and the Grange which is numbered 688 and not 233 as I previously stated.
The plot looks the same as I remember but access to the property was off Budworth road but now appears to be from Noctorum road.

The gate posts that had "Inscot" engraved on them have disappeared which is why I originally thought the building had been destroyed, I think it is now apartments.

On google maps you can see the croquet lawn quite clearly to the west of the house.

Im not sure I follow what you mean. Firdene is still there, it is flats now. Is this the property that you are calling Inscott? I was walking the dogs there today and the gate post is still there with Inscott on. I will take a picture to show you. This is where you played croquet?

Sorry if that sounds stupid!

It does sound like the property especially if the gate posts are still there, though I can't find them on google maps.
No idea about the name Firdene either as the house was definitely called Inscot where we played croquet.

Would very much appreciate a photo to confirm if it is the correct house, but you my have to walk up the drive a bit.
