Techy sort of question. When you say your drier "broke" what do you mean?
Does the drum still rotate? If not it could simply need a new drive belt. If the drum does not rotate then the safety switch will shut off the heater. I would not have thought fitting a new drive belt was a big job.
Can you rotate the drum by hand? If you can but it does not rotate with the motor then again looks like drive belt. If the drum is "stuck" then could still be the drive belt ie broken one has jammed the system - but could also be a jam caused by "the missing sock" etc
If the drum rotates but there is no heat then more serious ie blower or heater element, but still not a mega job.
I have to admit it is a long time since I had experience of a tumble drier and the one I had used very simple controls, on/ off and timer. These days they may well have banks of more complex electronic controls, and if they have gone . . . . its gone
