Same reason that people go on strike even though they lose money by doing so. Its looking after the long term future, not worrying too much about the short term loss.

I am not crying about the price of fuel. It needs to be expensive. Where else will the government get the tax revenue from to pay for the bloated public sector, welfare bill and everything else that so many people take for granted?. Whilst people still use the car all the time for journeys they could easily walk then its obviously not expense enough.

I find it slightly odd about the farmers complaing as they use red diesel which is taxed at a far lower rate, but the overall increase in diesel is crippling haulage which in turn effects everybody including people who dont own a car it cost £975 per fuel tank to fill our truck this needs doing twice a week so we have to pass on the cost,So you the consumer is paying more for your fuel in the way of tax and more for your goods due to the vat increase and the extra cost being levied on the haulage companies Etc,,,We are being taxed to melting point!

We are being taxed a hell of a lot in all areas but I don't see a realistic alternative for the short term at least.

Although Im in agreement that petrol / diesel costs are expensive, IIRC ours are one of the most expensive in europe!

What concerns me also (mainly because my main car is Diesel) - is why is our derv more than petrol???? Our diesel is one of the very few european countrys where derv is more than petrol think

Another point worth mentioning is our location - due to being local to stanlow, delivery costs are low, so our price locally is lower than the national average.

Price of fuel doesnt really bother me tbh; as I always say, theres a lot of things in life id like but can't afford them, so I do without, or save-up for them lol.

If I couldnt afford to run my cars, I walk, use public transport, or get rid/get something cheaper.

As I also always say, fuel duty (both tax and VAT) generates around £30billion per year to the public purse. So the loss of that means either further public spending cuts, or tax increases elsewhere; so either way, we are going to pay for it.

We may as well just pay fuel tax and be done with it. The price of fuel being so high for the last few months, is not as a result of tax, indeed the planned Labour tax hike was cancelled and actually reduced in this months budget; the price of fuel being high is as a result of world oil prices being at a 3 years high, and increasing; I can't honestly, see the Opec nations increasing output, and resolving their tensions, and the likes of the Chinese and other emerging Asian nations deciding to lower their consumption to help the people of little old Blighty to afford the cost of oil and thus fuel.

It's highly unlikely you'll be blockading for a week. Trespass law (most of Oil Sites Road is private property), the Road Traffic Act and the various anti-terrorism laws will see the police moving you on after a few hours.

AA figures for March 2011 averages put UK 11th most expensive for petrol and 2nd for diesel in EU.

In the past it was down to the fuel escalator and non-ULSD attracting a higher duty rate than petrol. Today ultra-low sulphur diesel attracts the same fuel duty as petrol (57.95p/l), and virtually all diesel available at the pump is of the ULSD variety. However, now it's down to the economics of supply and demand.

The EU has an historic preference for diesel, in France for example 70% of vehicles on the road are DERV. However, in the UK there are more petrol cars on the road than diesel. This is an historic trend, so that even though current sales of DERV and petrol vehicles is approximately equal (if not now actually in favour of DERV) it will take time before diesel becomes as cheap or cheaper than petrol again. Though if you remember when petrol first hit £1/l, diesel was already over £1.10/l...

Explain to me again, how you propose to prevent Asia's ever-increasing need for oil, the tensions within the Middle East from disrupting production or scaring the markets, and how you plan to get Opec to increase production, to ensure the oil price stays low for us Brits to enjoy cheap fuel prices...

And then you can explain how we generate the £35 billion in lost revenue again, once fuel duty and VAT is removed, and whether you prefer tax increases somewhere else (maybe added to income tax - okay if you are a dolite) or further public spending cuts...

The problem with that idea, is the prices are still going to follow the market pricing; so oil is still going to break through $200 a barrel as demand surges and people have a bit more money in their pockets in the west, as we emerge from recession.

As you say though, it doesnt really matter about the price of fuel; id like to see it hit £2.00 per litre, because the roads cetrainly seem to be getting quieter and quieter as the fuel price increases further, and it makes the whole driving and getting from A-B experience so much more pleasureable. More freedom, less queues.

But surely if fuel becomes too expensive resulting in less cars on the road,Then surely the loss of tax revenue will have to be found elsewhere as you mentioned earler so really its a no win situation,Perhaps if we didnt have so many European workers here bleeding our country dry things may be better,They are automatically allowed equel rights as any UK citizen dental hospital etc.. they work here and then return to there own country for 12 weeks and in doing so dont have to pay income tax!!That pisses me right off
