A few years ago I bought a silver cup inscribed “Schools Public Speaking Competition, Sponsored by The Rotary Club of Wallasey”. The winners of the competition are also inscribed and cover the period 1965 to 1985. Every now and then when I’ve rediscovered the cup shoved in the back of a cupboard I’ve tried to find out more about the competition with no luck. However, with the vast accumulated knowledge of Wiki members to draw on I thought I’d have another go!

Does anyone know when the competition started/finished, what was involved and who ran it? Even more interesting, did any Wiki member take part or do you know of someone who did? Even better, did you win it – if you did, you can have the cup if you want it though it’s not in very good condition.

The list of winners is:

1965 Diana STUDDART (St. Georges Secondary)
1966 Lyn BEATTY (St. Georges Secondary)
1967 Joyce BURNS (Moreton Secondary)
1968 Susan HEADS (Moreton Secondary)
1969 Elain AVISON (Quarry Mount Middle)
1970 Not Recorded
1971 Stephen ALEXANDER (St. Mary’s College)
1972 Christopher POWER (Oldershaw Grammar)
1973 Michael MURPHY (St. Mary’s College)
1974 Janet WALSH (St. Mary’s College)
1975 Michael MURPHY (St. Mary’s College)
1976 Debbie MUIR (Oxley Senior Comp.)
1977 Meta STEWART (St. Mary’s College)
1978 Meta STEWART (St. Mary’s College)
1979 Trevor EDGAR (Henry Meols)
1980 Mark REID (St. Mary’s College)
1981 Rachel BRACE (St. Mary’s College)
1982 Robert HUGHES (Mosslands)
1983 Janet EGDELL (St. Mary’s College)
1984 Kieron COLLINS (St. Mary’s College)
1985 Kirstie PELLING (St. Mary’s College)

Some fine old school names listed there!

Just noticed the pic's sideways - sorry about that!!!

Where was Moreton Secondary?
Was it about where Kwiksave is or was it in Douglas Drive

I think it's the school that is now Clare Mount in Fender Lane, built mid 1950s.
