Wirral mum presents petition to Parliament calling for 'Life to mean life'

Jean Taylor, who lost her daughter Chantel to a killer in 2004, is today lobbying the Government not to reduce prison sentences for murder.

Jean, from Birkenhead, is founder of Families Fighting For Justice, and has gathered an 800-signature petition to ask for no changes to minimum sentences.

The petition will be presented to parliament by Wirral West MP Esther McVey today.

Ms Taylor has campaigned tirelessly for "Life to mean life" after her daughter was killed in 2004.

She wanted to bring together families of victims and work to change the law on sentencing for murderers.

Ms Taylor said: "We managed to gather these signatures in a week and we want to show the government that they can't change sentencing for murder.

"Any time any change is even mentioned, we are always quick to act and that's how it will always be.

"Our campaign is for all the victims and their familes but it also for those people who are sick and tired of picking up a newspaper and seeing a killer being given too short of a sentence.

"We are a strong group and parliament know that if minimum sentences are lowered we will march through the streets of London.

"But we shouldn't have to do that. I believe that no parent should have to walk through our cities with their loved ones faces plastered across their t-shirts. It is just not right." For more information, click the link below...

Shame, it will never happen, because the human rights brigade and the European Union put the rights of criminals before the rights of innocent, hard working and decent citizens in our society.

Life should mean life, and not a life of snooker rooms, playstation 3's and gyms, but a life of books and 16 hours per day hard graft at best! Personally, id go a bit more extreme than that, provide a real deterrent, but that would politically incorrect lol.

Whilst I like the idea of hanging summer, I have about as much trust in our justice system getting it right sometimes, as I did Roy Hodgson lol. There is too much of a chance of someone being wrongly convicted, and sentenced to death, especially given the way police and the CPS have "targets" to meet, both politically and publically, and to be seen "apparently" catching and convicting say a killer or rapist, is sometimes more important (and far easier) than actually catching and convicting the right person.

Besides which, the death penalty is the easy way out - make the fuckers suffer, long and hard, pay a penalty for their crimes and pay a harsh one at that!!

Lol nooooo, not hanged, I still like the guy, he just got it drastically wrong sometimes, and the justice system seems as bad sometimes.

There was a guy from Liverpool who had his conviction quashed not so long ago, but had been hung for murder when the death sentence was still in force. Unfortunately, there is just too much risk of wrongful convition for it to be a viable option imho.

well said mttlfc.....too many wrngful cnvictions to warrant the death penalty.....but prison should be deterrent ...not some holiday camp

I agree hard labour is what they need and no tv's or playstations

My mum was a prison warden down in holloway back in the sixty's it was not so easy for them then mum used to turn a blind eye and ooops they fell down the stairs or walked into door

That was Ruth Ellis, she was the last woman to be executed in the United Kingdom. She was convicted of the murder of her lover, David Blakely, and hanged at Holloway Prison, London, by Albert Pierrepoint on 13th July 1955.

MattLFC do you mean Timothy Evans, who was hanged for the murder of his wife...when in actal fact it Serial Killer John Christie that murdered her?? Timothy Evans was pardoned quite a few years later.

That was obviously the problem with hanging....too late for Timothy Evans though now!!

In America you go on death row for at least 7 years, sometimes as long as 15 years. If you can't prove you are innocent in that time then you are guilty in my book. Because of death row you never hear about "mistakes" in America. Or, don't hang them give them 100 year sentances instead so the barstards never get out. Life should mean life, better still in my opinion they should hang.

I think life should mean life, but say someone robs a shop and stabs someone, then hears the police coming, he'll think i'm going hang so i'll kill you all, got nothing to lose, i know its sad but what do you do.

Bring back hanging, but will "they" put it to the public? That will bring taxes down one way or another.
