Bin collection delays on Merseyside spark hundreds of complaints

HUNDREDS of complaints of delays in rubbish collections were made in Merseyside.

Councils today vowed to clean up any mess still left over from the festive season.

Bad weather throughout December slowed binmen down and in some cases ground services to a halt.

Areas of Wirral and St Helens were among the worst affected by heavy snowfall, with some residents complaining they will have waited up to a month by the time their bins are finally emptied.

Lelly McDonald, of Higher Bebington, said: “No bins have been collected in Teehey Lane since December 14, despite the fact it was fully accessible as a main road.

“It was gritted when the snow was here. This is a disgusting level of service.”

Mike Stevens, a city centre resident, was also affected.

He said: “Collections were rescheduled due to bank holidays or bad weather, and earlier last year they restructured their routes and missed us.

“We have not had a collection since December 15.”

But a spokesman for Liverpool council said: “No area in the city waited longer than nine additional days for collection.

“As of Wednesday January 5, we were up to date on collecting purple bins and 100% of rubbish was collected.

“Blue boxes will have all been emptied by tomorrow at the latest.”

Knowsley council also experienced problems during the Christmas period.

A spokesman said: “Residents who were scheduled to receive revised collection dates were notified of collection arrangements during early December, as planned.”

St Helens, Sefton and Wirral councils said they were doing their best to combat the problems and expected collections to be back on schedule by the end of the week.

A spokesman for St Helens council said: “Six extra bin crews were deployed on Wednesday to help clear some of the backlog triggered by bad weather and bank holidays.”

What the councils said and what they did were totally different things. Wirral put things up on the website but it didn't bear any relation to reality and the advice given was contradictory, as were the replies to emails. Like I said to them myself, just tell people the truth and what is really happening and they can deal with it because they are informed, bullshit them and it makes matters worse.

What gets me is the moaners expect others to do what they wouldn't do themselves, they have no thought whatsoever for the welfare of other people. If there was a thousand bomber raid going on by jerry, they would still expect their bins to be emptied if it was their day.

Likely you're right there bert. I read the website though and followed the advise and kept trundling the bin out, then back in, then out, then back in, then out again. Some of the old folk here have put theirs out today, the normal day, but no way of knowing if things will carry on as normal and they will be emptied. They obviously didn't get any message about the binnies coming round yesterday. I chased the wagon myself with one neighbours bin because she had just missed it. I couldn't pass any info on to anyone because the website couldn't be believed and I'd have been called an idiot if I'd passed the gen on, which turned out to be erroneous anyway. It'll sort out eventually I suppose, until the next time.

I realize the info was a bit scatty and communications were not at the best when it was safe to resume work, thats a pen pushers arse that needs to be kicked, my gripe is with the people who still expect their bins to be emptied, no matter what, they are just inconsiderate (watershed).
