Five Merseyside men arrested over 10 million smuggled cigarettes

FIVE Merseyside men were arrested over a haul of 10 million smuggled cigarettes.

The suspects, all from Wallasey, were arrested after a swoop by officers from HM Customs and Revenue on an Ellesmere Port warehouse on Monday.

They were later bailed.

The cigarettes, with a duty value of around £1.8m, were imported into the UK from Dubai via Holland.

Mike O’Grady, from HMRC, said: “This operation resulted in the seizure of millions of illicit cigarettes in all likelihood eventually destined for Cheshire and Merseyside.”

The cigarettes will now be recycled to provide power for the National Grid.

At last!!!! A new solution to the energy crisis!
Never mind coal, oil, nuclear power - why didn't anyone think of using cigarettes to fuel our powerstations, before? Its a win-win! Generate electricity AND save millions on healthcare into the bargain! Brilliant!

If the gov wanted to stop tobacco/cigs smugglingwhy don't they get the tobacco companies to sell the goods abroad at a price which is only a couple of pounds cheaper than what we have to pay in the shops - then they can get more taxes from the companies and there wouldn't be any smuggling if there was no profit to the smugglers.
Personnally I would like to see all confiscated goods by Customs etc resold maybe back to the original sellers (instead of burning them?)
and any monies then gained being used for something useful.

Wonder how many millions of £s get burnt each year

I thought the tobacco companies do sell their goods at the same price, it's just our government taxes more?
