Hello smile

My Husband's Mum's family are from New Brighton and i'm researching his family tree

His Great Grandmother Emily had a cafe in Albert Street called Carney's in the 1950's and i was wondering if anyone remembers it at all ?

I've seen some old photos of the house when it was the cafe that i'll try to get scanned and posted up at some point.

I'm also looking for any old photos of St Georges Mount if anyone could help.

Thanks

Lisa

The only one I remember in Albert street was the one just before the corner of Victoria road, on the right as you approached the road. It was a chippy though unless it changed over the years? There wasn't much in Albert street at all apart from a bookies in later years and of course the Joke shop was on the corner but strictly speaking that was Tollemache street.

Be interested to hear more and see the photo. The name Carney certainly rings a bell.

St Georges Mount. Posh people smile Bill Douglas used to live there. Still owns SS Radio in Mill lane.

Thanks for the reply. It was 1 Albert St. I'll post some pics tomorrow when i'm at my Mother-in-Laws as she has the photos (if i can figure out how to upload them :))

Interestingly, Emily also lived at the house that became the joke shop if it's the one on the corner of Tollemache Street and Albert Street (number 28 i think) before she moved across the road.

If you remember the joke shop, do you know the Walkers as they also lived at the house in Albert St. Emily's Daughter Winifred (known as Minnie) married Sidney Walker (my Husband's Grandparents) Sid was a RNLI volunteer. Emily was also related to the Laskier's who lived in Egerton Street for many years.

I know the Laskier name. Not sure about Walker although I should do as I had relatives on the crew plus I spent a lot of time in the boat house playing on the snooker table etc.

Bill Cross my mate will know of him. He was on the crew and so were half of his ancestors.

Look forward to seeing the photo.

Just been out and bumped into my elderly aunt who remembers them all very well. Surprised me by saying that there were a number of shops where I never knew any existed apart from the bookies. She knew the family. Mentioned a Brown and Lord I think. Do these names mean anything?

Hi, they don't ring any bells but i'll ask my Mother-in-Law.

How lovely that your Aunt remembers them smile

I'm trying to find an old map of New Brighton to look at Albert St before WW2 as some of the houses were destroyed in a bombing raid apparently and that's why there's a car park opposite now.

Yes we used to have our bonfire on that site until they built garages. Bit of a map from 1909 but doesn't really tell you much. Ignore the orange bit. That was something else I was working on.

Earlston Reference Library has Gore Directories for the 1950s which will give you some info BUT they just closed for 2 weeks for refurb (from 13th Sept).

Hi, the chippy was called Clarks, the joke shop was called Kardoonies (not sure of the spelling)

Helles, where did you live in New Brighton as my Mother-in-Law also used to play where the bomb site was on the corner of Tollemache St and Albert St so she is wondering if you knew each other. PM me if you prefer smile
