COMMUTERS face long delays this morning after a car accident closed down part of the Kingsway Tunnel.

Two vehicles were involved in the incident in the north tube of the tunnel, which links Liverpool and Wallasey, earlier this morning.

Police say it could be after 9am when the incident is cleared and traffic can return to normal.

The Wallasey-bound tube of the Kingsway Tunnel on Merseyside has been closed after a head-on crash.

A BMW and a Rover collided just before 0300 BST in a contraflow lane.

A woman, 19, a passenger in the back of the Rover, suffered serious head injuries and is being treated at Arrowe Park Hospital.

The BMW driver, aged 69, suffered minor injuries, while a man, 45, driving the Rover and a second female passenger, aged 20, had cuts and bruises.

Motorists have been advised by police to avoid using the Kingsway Tunnel if possible and to allow more time to complete their journeys if using the Queensway Tunnel to travel between Wirral and Liverpool.

A contraflow lane has been set up in the unaffected, Liverpool tube of the Kingsway Tunnel, but police said traffic is heavy.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident.

A Merseyside Police spokeswoman said: "The collision took place while the Wallasey to Liverpool side of the tunnel was closed for maintenance, requiring traffic to travel in both directions along contraflow lanes in the Wallasey-bound tube.

"This was not a case of a motorist driving down one of the tubes in the wrong direction."

UPDATE: Kingsway Tunnel re-opens after collision

THE Kingsway Tunnel has re-opened following a collision earlier this morning.

A contraflow system that had been in place in the Liverpool-bound tube has been removed following the incident, which occured at around 3am.

Four people were taken to hospital following the incident, which involved a Rover and BMW vehicle.

A 19-year-old woman from Ellesmere Port, who was in the back of the Rover, is being treated for serious head injuries.

The 69-year-old driver of the BMW, from Pensby, remains in hospital as a precaution.

The 45-year-old driver of the Rover, who is from the Chester area, has been released from hospital along with a 20-year-old woman from Cheshire.

Witnesses to the collision can call police on 0151 777 5771 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Hopefully all will pull through.

I always hate going through that tunnel when there is a contraflow in place, there is simply nowhere to go if there is a problem.

They wanna stop having two way traffic in single tunnels! Pathetic, if they want to do work on the tunnel they should stop using it altogether and use the Birkenhead one whilst work is being carried out.
I hope the young lady is alright.

Very right Ste. Or even leave 1 tunnel open in one direction and use Birkenhead for the return journey.

But isn't the Birkenhead tunnel two way, ALL the time?

It took me an hour to get to work, New Brighton-West Kirby. Was annoyed at the time, but the news is awful.
Hope all recover.
