Witness appeal after man is beaten up in Wallasey

A 22-YEAR-OLD man from Wallasey was left seriously injured after he was beaten up following a night out with his girlfriend.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the apparently unprovoked assault, which occured at about 2am on Sunday, July 25.

The man was walking home along Rice Lane with his girlfriend after a night out when they were approached by two males.

They threatened the 22-year-old and attacked him.

The offenders then left on foot in the direction of Trafalgar Road.

The victim sustained serious injuries, including a bleed on the brain and is currently suffering loss of feeling in his legs.

His mobility has been dramatically reduced. He remains in hospital and his condition is currently being monitored.

The motive for this attack is unknown, but police believe it was a targeted attack.

The first offender is described as a white and he wearing grey jogging trousers and was bare chested.

The second offender is described as being white, 5ft 6 ins tall of slim build. He was wearing dark coloured clothing with a hooded top.

An 18-year-old man has been arrested in connection with this incident. He has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Detective Constable Lyndsey Harper said: "This was an extremely nasty, unprovoked assault on a man who had simply been enjoying a night out.

Due to the serious nature of the victim's injuries detectives are keen to trace any potential witnesses.

"We are determined to catch the men responsible. I would appeal for anyone who was in the area at the time and saw this assault take place or the offenders to come forward and help our investigation. Community information is vital when investigating reports of this type."

Anyone with information should contact Detective Constable Lyndsey Harper at Birkenhead CID on 0151 777 2274 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

I wonder how or what the reason for it being targeted is? This type of attack is so common it worries me. Middle daughter often walks that way to get to her boyfriends.

The use of the phrase is meant to reassure people in the local area by implying that it is very unlikely to occur again, because it was'nt a random act but a 'targetted attack' against a specific target.

They may be unable to prevent such attacks by by their inability to catch the offenders, but can attempt to give the public a false sense of security by the use of such phrases, such words are cheaper than the wages of an officer in the area.

Disgusting!

I live in Rice Lane and am so sick of all the trouble and drunken fights/arguments that take place when one or another 'richard head' has had a skinful. Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night you know that no matter how hot the weather there is no way that you're gonna leave your window open because you know you'll be worken up at least twice in the night. I see that this was another 'unprovoked' attack, you dont have to provoke anyone living round here. There are some roads between Trafalgar rd and Rice Lane that many of my neighbours feel intimidated walking up in broad daylight. People who have lived in their homes for more than 40 years now feel intimidated into staying in after dusk.
I have tried to do what I can. I run a small residents group who meet with people once a month who bring me their problems with anti-social behavior, car crime, vandalism, nuisance neighbours, and I put them in touch with agencies that can help them and report back to our local Councillors and police. I have to say that the local Police and Councillors have been fantastic, but there is only so much that they can do... they need people to come forward and speak to them, they need to be told when there is a problem, many people see this as being 'a grass' and will not involve themselves. I see it that my little group of nighbours and I are making a stand.. we will not allow the scumbags in the area to destroy the area we live in, despite past intimidation and threats of being petrol bombed out of my house..

My heart goes out to the young man and his family. I can't imagine how he and his family must be feeling. I really hope that they can lock up the ... that did this to him. I wish to god I or some of my neighbours had witnessed the attack and that we could do something productive to help.

This seems like a justifiable case for CCTV. We make middle daughter get taxis now, we don't want her walking for the bus.
