my gran and granddad lived in Livingstone Road and the back gate was in Dee St I remember the green grocers at the corner of Dee St .Chip shop next door in St Pauls Road, the men gambling using two pennies to bet on heads or tails outside the pub when it closed on Meadow lane. Two sweet shops in St Pauls Rd one by the bridge and one at the top of St Pauls Rd.Off licence bottom of Livingstone Rd.The houses being demolished in St Pauls Rd. opposite Dee St.
I remember all of the above!
Did you grandparents live next door to the Robinsons by any chance they were my great aunt and uncle!
If your grandparents gate backed on to Dee Street we probably played ball games up it and got told off! I think there was only about 5/6 gates backing on to the road etc.
I remember the green grocers on the corner..they used to use those old brass weighing scales.
I remember the chippy too.. used to serve everything in news paper!
They all became derelict and we used to play in what was left..calling them the bombed out buildings etc
I also remember the two sweet shops and there was a pawn broker by the bridge. The sweetshop at the top of St Pauls road was owned by a Mr Lord. We adopted his dog ..a german shepherd cross called Sooty!
We used to get her bones for free from the butchers at the very top of St Pauls Road almost opposite old Lord's sweetshop! I remember as a child being scared by the stuffed bulls head they had on the wall. There was sawdust on the floor and huge sides of beef hanging on a rail. I used to get told off for pushing these hanging half cows into one another and making them swing!
I remember walking past the off liscence in Livingston road and the wonderful smell of beer that came from it.
At the very bottom of that road..where Peel street ran along it there was a tardis...an old blue police box!
My aunts lived in Meadow lane. Another lived in Star Street snd also another in Planet Street.(we were quite a big family) They knocked those roads down and built Jackson House which was an old folks home.
I went to the mission house sunday school which was in St Pauls road.. and now is the only thing left from those days apart from the pub..is it the Admiral.... memory not what it was!
It was a well loved area and folk were proud of what they had. Windows were always washed ..front steps always swept and brass on doors gleamed.. the women were a force to be reckoned with!! No nonsense hard working types!
We moved away in 1974 when the houses were due to be demolished.. but I came back in 1981 just to get married in St Pauls church where I was baptised and also went to sunday school.
I now live in a very leafy area but still miss the cameraderie of my childhood home. Everybody always looked out for eveyone else!
I still love the area even though now it is so very much changed!
Happy happy days!
Would love to hear other people's memories.
