The Castle Brewery had operated in Market Place, Birkenhead from the 1830s. By 1877 it was run by Gatehouse and Yates. In 1886 a new brewery was built in Fairfield Street, Ardwick, this was also named Castle Brewery. A year later William Yates and Co Ltd was registered and took over the breweries in Birkenhead and Ardwick.
Yates's Castle Brewery Ltd was registered in October 1896, and this company acquired the breweries and 175 licensed premises.
The Birkenhead Castle Brewery was closed in 1934, but the Ardwick brewery continued until John Smith's Tadcaster Brewery Co Ltd took over Yates in 1961.
