British firm BSkyB has joined forces with Microsoft to give Xbox 360 owners the chance to watch live television and on demand content on their consoles.

The two firms launched the new Sky Player service on Xbox 360 today but in a u-turn the service has been switched off for new users until tomorrow due to an "unforeseen technical issue". According to many who were able to use the service today there has been a mixed reaction to the service. Some were able to use it perfectly whilst others struggled getting content streaming correctly. Microsoft issued the following statement:

"The Sky Player on Xbox 360 service did successfully launch early this morning, it has subsequently been suspended due to an unforeseen technical issue. With so much excitement and interest in the service, we'd much prefer to ensure that our customers enjoy the highest possible quality of service. We would like to take this opportunity to apologise to our customers who have attempted to access the service today. Sky Player engineers are hard at work to resolve the problem - we expect to have the full service available tomorrow."

Clearly both companies did not anticipate the high demand for the service and may not have conducted enough large-scale user testing beforehand.

Sky Player for Xbox 360 gives subscribers access to live pay TV channels - including Sky Sports and video on demand content. Neowin exclusively revealed the full channel list and cost earlier this month. Microsoft also plans to launch the Sky Player service in Media Center "soon". We managed to get an early sneak peek at this service at the Windows 7 UK launch last week. Existing Sky TV customers will be able to purchase an online Sky Player multiroom subscription for £9.75 per month. Customers with Sky Multiroom or Sky Broadband Unlimited will be able to access live channels for no extra charge. Non-Sky TV customers will require a monthly subscription that starts at £15 per month to the Base Entertainment Pack. In addition to the live channels, customers will also have access to on-demand programmes from channels they subscribe to.

Fingers crossed that the service is up and running correctly tomorrow.

tomorrow it is then!

Lol, seen this a few days ago on a BBC website video, it looks a nice little feature to be honest... id love to buy a 7G console as a media machine, but both the PS3 and Xbox are wank for reliability, and I aint risking hundreds of my hard earned for a years fun lol.

Ill stick with the PVR and media centre for now, at least till Microsoft and Sony start building reliable consoles.

They do seem to have designed the interface for the Sky Player fantastic though, if not a little too flashy (which may impact on how easy it is to find what you want). I like the HD EPG replication.

touch wood ive got both ps3 an xbox never had a problem with either, it the way ppl use them that breaks them, just keep the air flowing to keep them cool, just like u would on a pc. my ps3 runn all day long as ive got linux on it, so use as a pc for downloading etc. but i think the ps3 has a better GUI, eiser to use an find what u want. i just want live sky, my uncle works for sky an has had it on his xbox for sometime, very nice player and stream is great quality

Sorry, but there is a inhrent design or manufacturing process fault with the PS3's for so many to have problems with the soldering joints.

If it was something that just happens as a result of excess heat or pro-longed usage, everything electrical would be suffering it lol. My Technics amp, despite being of supposed cool running "Class H" spec, gets insanely hot sometimes, the fan has only ever kicked in once or twice in all the years ive had it (both times when running that stupid high pitched screech tone at 80dB or summit, the one for mobile phones lol), yet that has (touch wood) never let me down.

As for the Xbox360, I find it strange that Microsoft will only cover one type of hardware fault within their 3 year warranty.

I never remember such widespread and highly reported problems with the Dreamcast or PSX, and the Wii does not suffer them either for that matter.

Of course all electrical items will suffer hardware/software problems from time to time, and it is fine so long as they mainly isolated cases.

I just don't have any trust in them, id love a PS3 (not really for gaming though) but I aint prepared to throw £250 down Sony's coffers and then have to shell out another £250 15 months later!!

I went into Tesco the other day, and everytime I find myself looking at the Foxsat HDR and the PS3, with a mind to buy them lol... they have the old ones at the same price as the new slim ones.

Is there any advantages of the old one, I understand the HDD is less on the old one, but is there anything removed on the slim one?

I think we shall have to give the slim one time, it's only recently launched, too early to tell if it has the same inherent problems, but I would have thought they would have addressed the issues.

the only feature removed from the slim machine is the option to install another operating system. no idea y it was removed tho?
im on the old "fat" ps3.
but even if u went for a fat ps3 u can swap the hdd for what ever size u want, its just a 2.5" hdd, easily done
ps3 ftw

60gb can play PS2 games. Probably a few other subtle changes.

Ah I see, cheers. So for PS2 playback, the older one is better? Can they not emulate the PS2 and PSX hardware on the cell?

smile

it's more than possible for the cell to emulate both the emotion engine and graphics sythesiser. the PAL 60GB consoles utilize Software emulation whilst the NTSC 60GB models had the actual hardware components inside them giving it 100% backwards compatability whilst the software only has 73% compatability with PS2 Games.(although the only emulated part was the Emotion engine as PAL 60GB PS3's still had The Graphics Synthesiser) one of the reasons this was cut was the fact the PS2 is still in Production and with games still being released for it. Sony plans to end the PS2's life soon and re-release the entire library on the PSN Store alongside Dreamcast Titles under a special agreement with SEGA.n the PSX is emulated on all PS3 models at an good degree. You can watch freeview on the PS3 via the PlayTV acessory. in order for an Xbox 360 to Stream Sky the console has to be sent to Sky directly for them to modify it with a "skybox" built into it alongside A monthly subscription fee (the same as normal sky)
