Brave PC up for top award after saving man from falling at Garston docks

A MERSEYSIDE police officer who stopped a man jumping from a crane has been nominated for a national bravery award.

PC Paul Simm scrambled 80ft up the crane at Garston docks to save the 29-year-old man, who was in a state after arguing with his wife and leaving home.

He climbed to the top of the crane in King Street and refused to come down.

PC Simm, a dad-of-one, clambered up after him and spent time talking to the man.

But when they agreed they would both go down the ladder, the man suddenly tried to jump.

PC Simm thrust his arm out and caught the man, leaving them both perched perilously on the edge of a thin ledge.

Eventually the constable of 20 years service managed to drag the man back to safety and guide him down from the lofty perch.

Now Merseyside Police Federation has put him forward for the annual National Police Bravery Award. Kathryn Kane, chairman of the local branch of the federation, said: “Constable Simm’s quick thinking and assessment of the situation undoubtedly saved this man’s life, his actions and his modesty in accepting this accolade are a testament to both his bravery and his commitment to serving the public good. He is an advocate not just for Merseyside but for all police officers who find themselves in these situations and are called on to make decisions that have a significant impact on people.

“He displayed incredible bravery throughout, despite the drunken man’s determined self destruction drive.”
