Choose the right fish and keep their water perfect, and they should never die on you othe than through old age (unless they happen to be carrying a hereditery fatal disease such as DG Irodovirus found in neon gouramis or NTD found in Tetra's etc). Most fish die of stress (or infections, which are directly caused by stress n fish, unless the water has an infection present), and stress is usually caused by a few common factors, the most lethal being even slightly high ammonia levels, which leads to nitrite, but also too high a level of nitrate in the water and of course the usual overcrowding, fish need their space.

As I say mate, get ye fish from anywhere, so long as they look healthy and seem as active as they should be, and of course so long as all the fish are active and healthy, never buy out of a tank which has suspicious fish in.
If you get them with a fatal disease, there isnt much anyone can do about it (they are untreatable, hence the fatal bit lol), for example most neon gourami's nowadays carry the irridovirus as a result of selective breeding in Singapore and Malaysia, and eventually succumb to it, so whether you bought them from Andy's Aquatics, which I agree is a great place, or the local pet shop, you'd have just as much chance of them dying.
You must just be getting unlucky if the conditions are spot on. Another thing which can kill them is parasites, any fish kept in the same tank as snails in a pet shop, should be avoided because they carry parasits, and really, if you add snails to a tank, especially young ones, you are supposed to quarantine them for 4 - 6 weeks as the parasites can kill fish.
I won two "feeder" goldfish (the ones that are sposed to die the week you get em, hence their used for feeding other fish or testing pond water for fancies and then "disposing" of) at a school fair when I was about 6 or something, and they lived quite healthily for yonks, maybe 10 years, so it just proves that the type of fish and the conditions they have been bred in and lived in, play little part in the overall health of the fish once they are in a nice enviroment.
