Brother of Jermain Defoe killed

The half-brother of England footballer Jermain Defoe has died after being assaulted in east London.

Jade Defoe, 26, suffered serious head injuries in the attack in Leytonstone, east London.

He was taken to a London hospital where he died on Friday night, a police spokesman said. Post-mortem tests confirmed he died of a head injury.

A 28-year-old man arrested in connection with the incident remains in police custody.

The attack took place about 1700 BST on Monday in Walnut Gardens, near the junction with High Road Leytonstone.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "We do not believe a weapon was used during the assault.

"We retain an open mind as to any motive and inquiries continue to establish the full circumstances of the incident."

Jermain Defoe did not travel with his Tottenham Hotspur team mates for their match with Manchester United on Saturday because of the death.

"All at the club wish to extend their condolences to Jermain Defoe and his family following the death of his half-brother late yesterday," a spokesman for the club said.
