Boxer Joey Ainscough's career ended by street stabbing

A PROMISING city boxer almost died after he was stabbed while trying to stop a street fight.

Rising star Joey Ainscough, known as The Kirkdale Kid, suffered horrific injuries when he was knifed repeatedly in Walton last weekend.

The 29-year-old former ABA champion said his injuries mean he has been forced to retire from the sport.

He suffered a punctured bowel, bladder and rectum during the incident in Harlech street.

Today Mr Ainscough relived his nightmare ordeal.

He told the ECHO: “I thought I was dead on the spot. I couldn’t believe the pain.

“I had been having a few drinks with my mates to celebrate Everton getting into the FA Cup final and we ended up on County Road.

“We’d just been in Orry’s when we saw a scuffle. I went over and tried to stop these two lads fighting and someone threw a punch at me so I tried to defend myself.

“We were outside and I was speaking to one of the lads and another came out of nowhere with this big knife and put it through me twice from behind.

“I will never be allowed to fight again now because of a ...-bag who carries a knife. But I’m just glad to be alive.

“If it wasn’t for the surgeons, doctors and nurses here at the Royal and the support of my family and friends I don’t think I’d have made it.”

A Merseyside Police spokesman confirmed the were investigating an assault.

He said: “At around 4am officers were called to Harlech Street to reports of an altercation between a group of men.

“They found a 29-year-old man with stab wounds to his lower body. The victim, who is from the Bootle area, was taken to hospital where his condition is described as not life-threatening.

“A 21-year-old man who is also from the Kirkdale area suffered a cut to his lip, believed to have been caused by a bottle, during the incident.”

Contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

once again then, seens like another goverment failure as knife crime is on the up. They need to enforce the rules about blade carrying on the streets with a harsher punishment....for example treat it like a murder weapon...guns etc.

I cant think of one possible reason why anyone would need to leave the house with a knife on them ???

I think one of the problems lies with the fact that you can't search EVERYONE just in case they may be carrying a knife or other weapon. It's easy-ish in some of the clubs as they have the metal detectors and some even have the arches. The problem lies with the fact that the majority of stabbings are in the street or, as we have seen locally lately, peoples houses and places of work.

There will always be one coward who will find a way round the rules and for every one caught, there are probably at least 10 that aren't.

I jumped in to stop a lad getting battered even more than he was when I lived in Harrogate. 5 on 1 is not good odds and I wasn't going to be like everyone else and just stand idly by and watch it happen!! I got a rollocking from the Police for doing it, but they also thanked me - without the descriptions of them and me shouting and screaming at them, who knows what the outcome MAY have been. Yes, I could have ended up a victim too, but I took my chance!! They were all charged and got short sentences but at least they didn't get away with it!! And just for the record, I'd do it all over again!!

Few years ago, my fella was in the kwiky on poulton rd. He was in the queue where you get the fags and some ... bag reached over as the girl opened the till and grabbed a load of cash- the girl freaked out, scared.
Mr rude frogmarched the ... to the office. Police called -they were made up -think they had a warrant for him? Or just wanted to 'have him'. Never got a thanks, kiss me arse or nothing from the kwiky tho!

YAY Mr Rude clap I bet he wasn't the only one in the queue that saw it either. Generally there are people standing around watching as things like this just unfurl before their eyes - maybe if they ALL helped instead of shaking their heads or videoing it for youtube then less people would get away with things like this and assaults. I mean what are they going to do?? Take everyone on?? They are cowards so would probably sh*t themselves.

No law abiding citizen's life is worth any material amount of money or possesions - whether they take the risk or not is up to each individual - nobody should be pressured into "having a go", is your life worth a handfull of money from a till?

Now if you happen to have a heafty bottle of Chateaux Kwik Save 2008 and a clean shot of the criminals head - how could you not do it? If you are lucky enough to have two bottles of said refreshment, how could you not make sure?

Yes - life is a contradiction.
