An 18-year-old man has been found stabbed to death in Liverpool.

The teenager's body was discovered outside a house in Sprucewood Close, Tuebrook, in the early hours.

Police called to the scene said he had suffered several stab wounds and died at the scene. A post-mortem examination is due to take place later.

The area has been cordoned off while forensic examinations take place and police will be conducting house-to-house inquiries throughout the day.

Officers are urging anyone who was in the Breck Road and Belmont Road areas at about 0130 GMT and who may have seen anything suspicious to contact them.

THE teenage son of a gangster murdered in 1997 was chased through the streets of north Liverpool before being stabbed to death.

Tony Bromley died following a frenzied attack in the early hours of Saturday morning.

He was chased through the terraced streets of Anfield and knifed “several” times as he frantically tried to rouse the occupants of a house in Sprucewood Close.

The 18-year-old was the son of George Bromley Snr, known as The Enforcer, who was gunned down in a house in West Derby.

Our exclusive picture today shows Tony Bromley just moments before he met his brutal end.

CCTV images show him walking alone down Breck Road, while clutching a bottle of vodka, at exactly 1.20am.

He smashed the bottle on nearby railings and just minutes later was found lying on the floor with multiple stab wounds to his body and legs.

After banging on a front door in Sprucewood Close Mr Bromley fell into a doorway fatally injured.

A large green tent obscured the front of the house over the weekend – it was not thought to be connected to the victim.

Many stunned locals today remained tight-lipped about the murder.

But some neighbours did speak of how the teenager was fatally cornered.

An eyewitness said: “Tony got into an argument with a bloke outside the off-licence on Breck Road.

“They chased him and tried to attack him on some scrub land just set back from Belmont Road.

“He ran on a bit further. But they eventually caught up with him outside a house on Sprucewood Close.”

A woman, who lives opposite the murder scene in Belmont Road, told how she was doing a crossword at around 1.30am when she heard shouting and loud groans.

Residents reported hearing a misfiring motorbike or moped which seemed to be circulating round Belmont Road.

And others told of youths frantically scrambling over garden fences in Hennawood Close as they fled the scene.

Today the killers remained at large as detectives appealed for help, and described the attack as “targeted”.

Mr Bromley was known to police although officers publicly said they remained unclear about the motive for his killing.

Chief superintendent Stephen Watson, area commander for Liverpool north, told the ECHO: “This was a deliberate and particularly brutal attack on a young man which has devastated his family

“I would reassure the community that our investigations will be thorough and will continue until we bring those responsible before the courts.”

Tony’s father – George Bromley Snr – was shot dead as he sat in Charlie Seiga’s West Derby home in 1997.

Dubbed The Enforcer because of his fearsome reputation in the underworld, Bromley Snr was shot once in the back of the head and twice in the left side of his head from very close range in the kitchen of the house in Valescourt Road.

His killer still remains at large.

Tony’s older brother George Bromley Jnr is currently behind bars for his role in a Cumbrian heroin ring.

Today underworld sources told the ECHO the killing of teenager Tony was bound to send reverberations around Liverpool’s criminal fraternity.

One known gangster said he had been inundated with phone calls over the weekend about the murder as word about the Bromley tragedy filtered through.

On Friday evening Mr Bromley was out drinking with friends in pubs around Breck Road, visiting three separate pubs.

It is unclear whether he became separated from his friends or if there was an altercation earlier in the night.

Scene of crime officers were yesterday scouring gardens and looking beneath cars in adjacent Hennawood Close to try to find the murder weapon.

A two-minute walk away, on Bala Street, footprints were being examined by police along a gated alleyway, a possible escape route used by the murderer.

A number of floral tributes were left by friends and family at the entrance of Sprucewood Close.

One read: “18 years of age, so young to lose your life. RIP Tony. Deepest sympathy to the Bromley family.”

Another message said: “My dear friend Tony, I can’t believe you have gone. Words cannot express how I feel. Deepest sympathy to my dearest friend. RIP.”

Police carried out house-to-house inquiries over the weekend and high visibility patrols were stepped up.

Tony Bromley, who would have turned 19 today, was knifed to death in a frenzied attack in the early hours of Saturday after being chased through the streets of Anfield.

Today Tony’s heartbroken mother Sandra said she would struggle to get through the day.

Mrs Bromley, 45, said: “This should be a special day to celebrate his life – that has now been cruelly taken away.

“How could anyone do this to my lovely son?

“My son, who I will not be able to say ‘Happy Birthday’ to, watch his lovely smile as he opens his presents.

“He won’t be there to give me a big hug and kiss and say ‘Thanks mum’.

“Today should be a happy day but instead it’s a very sad day.

“My heart is broken in two and it will never mend.

“Tony was my life and I don’t know what I am going to do now he’s gone.

“I can’t believe he was taken away from us in this brutal way. Someone must know who did this to my son and we want people to speak to the police. If anyone has any information please come forward.”

Police raided six houses in Everton at 7am today executing warrants granted them by magistrates in a pre-planned operation.

All five men – aged 21, 22, 23, 26 and 27 – were arrested on suspicion of murder and taken to separate custody suites across Merseyside.

Mr Bromley was stabbed several times in the vicious attack in Sprucewood Close, Anfield, at around 1.30am on Saturday.

CCTV from the area captured him minutes before the attack walking alone along Breck Road clutching a bottle of vodka.

A short time later he was found lying on the floor with stab wounds to his body and legs.

After banging on a front door in Sprucewood Close Mr Bromley collapsed into a doorway and died before an ambulance could reach him.

Tony’s gangster father – George Bromley Snr – was shot dead in West Derby in 1997.

Dubbed The Enforcer because of his fearsome underworld reputation, Bromley Snr was shot in the head three times as he sat in the kitchen of a house in Valescourt Road.

His killer has never been caught.

Anyone with information about the stabbing should contact the Major Incident Room on 0151-777 8649 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

DETECTIVES are hoping to trace a biker spotted near the scene where a teenager was stabbed.

Tony Bromley, 18, was found in the early hours of the morning outside a house in Sprucewood Close, Tuebrook.

He died from multiple stab wounds.

Merseyside police detective chief inspector Karen Cummings said: "We believe Tony had been out drinking with friends in the area earlier in evening and appeal to anyone who was with Tony, or who saw him and his friends to contact us.

"We are particularly interested in identifying the rider and passenger of a red motorbike seen riding in and around the Breck Road and Belmont Road at the time of the murder."

Mr Bromley was discovered at 1.30am on Saturday, February 14.

Detectives believe the bike may have since been abandoned nearby. They want anyone who saw it or may have innocently removed it for scrap to come forward.
