Officers found the victim, Daniel Keatinge, with bullet wounds to his body on Formosa Road in Fazakerley at about 1930 GMT on Friday.

He was treated by paramedics at the scene but was pronounced dead at hospital a short time later.

Detectives have revealed the gunman escaped on foot in the direction of Eagle Dene, along a footpath off Formosa Road.

He is described as 16 to 20 years old and wore dark clothing at the time of the shooting.

Merseyside Police said the incident was now being treated as a 'targeted attack'.

Forensic examinations of the scene have taken place and detectives have begun house-to-house inquiries. The area has been cordoned off.

Det Supt Ian Mulcahey said: "We are determined to find the person responsible for the murder of Daniel Keatinge.

"Tackling gun crime is a top priority for Merseyside Police and we will not tolerate firearms on the streets of Merseyside.

"At the moment the motive for the attack is unknown.

"The investigation is in its early stages and we are appealing to the public to come forward with information that could help us. "

High visibility patrols of the Fazakerley area have been stepped up and will continue throughout the night.

Murdered man had been in prison

Daniel Keatinge, 25, was found in Formosa Road, Fazakerley, on Friday evening with bullet wounds and was later pronounced dead in hospital.

The victim was jailed for eight years in August 2003 for injuring two clubgoers in Liverpool city centre.

Merseyside Police said the motive for Keatinge's murder was unclear but they did not believe it was gang-related.

However, Keatinge was known to them because of his criminal past when he shot at a nightclub doorman but struck the clubbers. Neither was seriously hurt.

He admitted wounding, possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life and dangerous driving at Liverpool Crown Court.

A post-mortem examination revealed Keatinge has suffered four bullet wounds.

Det Chf Insp David Brunskill, said: "There is nothing to say that his history has anything to do with this incident but we are keeping an open mind.

"I can say there is no evidence to suggest this is gang related."

"This is a very quiet residential area and we are confident we will be able to piece together the movements of the offender."

Police are studying CCTV footage from the area in a bid for clues.

The lone gunman who shot Keatinge escaped on foot in the direction of Eagle Dene via a footpath and then is thought to have gone into Hawkmoor Park.

He is described as 16 to 20 years old and wore dark clothing at the time of the shooting.

Officers want to trace a silver car seen parked on Formosa Road before the shooting.

Keatinge, who was single and unemployed, had been with friends on Friday.

Mr Brunskill said Keatinge's family have been devastated by his death.

He added: "They are clearly very traumatised by the loss of a son.

"We are determined to find the person responsible for the murder of Daniel."

police are searching for the driver of a silver car seen in the area.

DCI Dave Brunskill said police were treating the killing as an isolated targeted attack.

He said: “We are also keen to talk of the owner of a silver car which was in the area of Formosa Road at the time of the incident, or anyone who saw the vehicle.

“We are keen for anyone who was in the vicinity of Formosa Road, Eagle Dene and the Hawksmoor Park area of Fazakerley, at 7.30pm on Friday, to come forward if they saw anybody acting suspiciously, or any vehicles which seemed out of place.

“We are keen to speak to anybody who has any infor- mation regarding the motive or who the offender was.”

Supt Bill McWilliam added: “We recognise that a visible police presence in the area does reassure people.

“We have been contacting key members of the community to discuss concerns which have been raised.

“We will be working with them to restore nor- mality back to the area.”

Mr Keatinge, of Fazakerley, was jailed in 2003 for shooting two innocent clubbers.

At that time, he was living in Stonedale Crescent, Croxteth, when he was thrown out of the Wonder Bar, on Slater Street, for kicking bottles around.

He returned later the same night wearing a balaclava and wielding a shotgun. Keatinge shouted abuse at the doormen before opening fire, but both his shots missed their intended target and struck two innocent drinkers standing nearby.

Four days after the shooting, Keatinge drove his Ford Mondeo at 80mph to 100mph down Edge Lane. He had been drinking and crashed into a lamp-post.

He appeared at Liverpool Crown Court and admitted wounding, possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life and dangerous driving.

Keatinge was sentenced to eight years and nine months.

However, police are not linking the two incidents.

Any witnesses should call the Merseyside Police gun crime hotline on 0800 458 1211 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

That's one of the things about law though, it's law thats really blind, not justice.

Besides, even if he was a bottom feeder, he didn't deserve to be shot surely?

Its the CPS that are the problem, the police can spend thousands of hours and offer up all kinds of evidence. But the CPs is so full of do gooders and political correct types that murderers do actualy get away with murder

The fact he has been shot indicates that he didnt get away with anything. Police have lost control its vigilante justice on the streets now. Civil war here we come.
